Washington Wizards v Chicago Bulls

2021-22 NBA Regular Season

Sunday 2 January 2022
Capital One Arena, Washington D.C.
Tip-off at 02:00

The Washington Wizards and the Chicago Bulls will open their NBA Regular Season action for 2022 with a clash at the Capital One Arena in Washington D.C. on the morning of Sunday 2 January. Tip-off is at 02:00.

The Wizards had a decent if unspectacular season thus far in 2021-22, finding themselves in mid-table in the Eastern Conference standings. This past weekend they were given a lesson by one of the NBA’s best teams, the Phoenix Suns, in suffering a 118-98 away defeat in Arizona.

"We are in a rut right now," Wizards forward Montrezl Harrell said. "Nobody is going to feel bad for us, brother. We've got to figure it out."

Said Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr.: "We competed. We didn't always do things right. Overall, we started the right way. I think it was one of those things, can you sustain it?"

The Bulls, meanwhile, have established themselves as one of the top teams in the East, as they jostle with the likes of the Milwaukee Bucks, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat to become the ‘nearest chasers’ of the Brooklyn Nets. However, they saw their momentum halted by a cancellation of successive games due to a Covid outbreak in their camp.

“I think the league is trying to do everything it can possibly do to play games and also keep teams safe and healthy," coach Billy Donovan said. "I don't know what the right number is in order to say this team should play or this team shouldn't play. Certainly we got hit really hard with this and we lost a lot of players. Other teams have been hit a little bit, but not as much. I've always said this, when you lose key players off your team, it definitely impacts you.”

In head-to-head stats, the Wizards and the Bulls have met in 233 Regular Season games since 1966-67, with Chicago claiming 126 wins compared to 107 for Washington. The teams’ last Regular Season meeting was in February 2021, with the Wizards winning 105-101 in Chicago thanks to 35 points from Bradley Beal.
