City, United set for crunch derby clash

2019/20 Premier League

Round 16

7-9 December 2019

Manchester City and Manchester United will open a new chapter in their storied derby rivalry when they meet at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 7 December 2019, kick-off at 19:30. The match is one of 10 spread from 7-9 December in the 16th round of the current Premier League season.

City returned to winning form in the Premier League with a midweek 4-1 thrashing of Burnley at Turf Moor, with goals from Gabriel Jesus (two), Rodrigo and Riyad Mahrez.

"We are thinking about ourselves and the next game. To think how many ways to win to be close is a stupid way to think,” said manager Pep Guardiola as his team looks to close the gap to leaders Liverpool in the title race.

“We have to think about the derby, game by game, it’s not just about the Premier League, the other competitions, and it’s important to take this rhythm for the next fixtures.”

United were also victorious in midweek, defeating Tottenham Hotspur (and former manager Jose Mourinho) 2-1 at Old Trafford. Marcus Rashford netted goals for the Red Devils, who will hope to take that momentum into their clash with City.

“It’s Man City on Saturday now, two days recovery and we go again,” said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. “We’ve just got to get as many points on the board as possible and I’ve said before this game it’s a great chance to show what we can do.”

In head-to-head stats, City and United have met in 155 previous matches. The Red Devils have claimed 61 wins compared to 47 for the Citizens, while 47 games have been drawn.

City completed a league ‘double’ over United in the teams’ Premier League matches last season, winning 3-1 at the Etihad Stadium in November 2018 and 2-0 at Old Trafford in April 2019.
