Tough start in store for South Africa’s Amajita

2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup

Argentina vs South Africa

Group F

Tychy Stadium, Tychy, Poland

Saturday 25 May, 20h30

South Africa face a tough test at the start of their 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign when they take on Group F rivals Argentina at the Tychy Stadium on Saturday 25 May, kick-off at 20h30.

SA secured qualification for the tournament thanks to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations in Niger earlier this year – they were beaten by Senegal in the semifinals before edging Nigeria on penalties in the bronze medal match.

Argentina coach Fernando Batista

Amajita, who are coached by Thabo Senong, will be appearing at their fourth U-20 World Cup and looking to improve on a best showing of reaching the last 16 back in 2009 as well as a group stage exit in their last appearance in Korea two years ago.

Argentina, meanwhile, were runners-up at the South American U-20 Championship in Chile earlier this year, where they finished behind surprise winners Ecuador on the final six-team log.

South Africa forward Siphesihle Mkhize

The junior Albicelestes will be appearing at their 16th U-20 World Cup, and they have won the tournament no less than six times (1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005, 2007) – though it has been 12 years since their last triumph.

Coach Fernando Batista will look to the likes of Adolfo Gaich, Gonzalo Maroni and Max Romero – who scored a combined seven goals at the South American Championship – to provide the firepower needed for success on the global stage.
