Rafael Nadal goes in search of 12th Barcelona Open title

2019 Barcelona Open

ATP World Tour 500

Real Club de Tenis, Barcelona

22-28 April 2019

Rafael Nadal will go in search of a 12th Barcelona Open title when the ATP Tour 500 event is held at the Real Club de Tenis from 22 to 28 April 2019.

The Spaniard has completely dominated this ATP Tour 500 event since winning his first title in 2005. The clay surface suits his muscular game and Nadal once again proved his dominance in last year’s edition when he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2 6-1 in the final.

Dominic Thiem is the number two seed for the Barcelona Open.

Nadal comes into the tournament having only made a return from injury at the Monte Carlo Masters in mid-April. Strong showings in tournaments such as the Barcelona Open will underpin the Spaniard’s ambition to win yet another French Open title at Roland Garros in May and June.

Nadal’s biggest threat will come from number two seed, Austrian Dominic Thiem. The 25-year-old has been in impressive form so far in 2019, most notably defeating Roger Federer last month in the final of Indian Wells in California. Thiem’s game can adapt effortlessly to the clay and he will go in search of his first Barcelona Open title, having been beaten in the 2017 final by Nadal.

Kei Nishikori is the number two seed for the Barcelona Open

Two-time champion Kei Nishikori will also be a major threat at Real Club de Tenis, as will last year’s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas. Karen Kachanov, Daniil Medvedev, Fabio Fognini, Denis Shapovalov, David Goffin and Alex de Minaur complete the list of top 10 seeds.
