Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Turffontein

A Pick 6 carryover of R1-million with an expected pool of R5-million, and several high-quality contests, make Saturday’s meeting on Turffontein’s outside track something to look forward to. Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock will saddle no fewer than 17 runners on the day, including four in the G2 ASSM Onamission Charity Mile over 1600m.

Mike’s pre-race comments are:
Race 1: “Precipeace is a horse that shows us a fair amount of ability, a promising colt. He has been ready to run for quite some time, but he has mental issues. He can do some strange things and hurt himself. Ability wise, he is a big runner. He is one of those horses, I’m not sure what he’s going to do. But he is nice, bears watching here.”

Race 2: Grape Shot was disappointing first time out, but pulled up shin sore. She shows some ability and will be effective over this trip and further, place chance. Lady Chatterley came back lame last time after her second start, that was following a fairly good first run. This is slightly short for her, she could be kicking on late. Quartet prospects.

Race 5: White Pearl ran a super and close second to Mrs Geriatrix last time and they were well clear of the third horse. She looks in a similar vein of form. I’m happy with her prep, good chance. On form, there has never been a lot between her and Platina Princess. She is well, we’re trying blinkers on her, I’d include her.

Race 6: Gimmeanotherchance needed his last run, moved up and just got tired the last bit. He is a lot fitter, however we take on one helluva field here. One of the best Graham Beck renewals I’ve seen. Our runner is drawn badly, but include him. A real quality field, a treat for punters.

Race 7: Dave The King’s had a good prep and he’s had a good draw. I am happy with the place he is in at the moment. He hasn’t raced on the standside track before, we’ll have to see how he goes. Include. Safe Passage is really well, this is too short and it’s a prep for the Summer Cup, but he should run a good race. Humdinger is drawn off the course, we will have to change her tactics. Shoemaker enjoyed a good rest on the farm. He is starting to get his old sparkle back, none of his old problems seem to be there. However, he is a few weeks off his peak. Hoping for a good run, but he needs this race to bring him on.

Race 8: Black Thorn managed a huge second at the Vaal last time, giving away 12kg. He’s come out of that run well, and is probably our preferred one of the three. Trois Trois Quatre has to prove that he stays the trip. This is a good race to see whether he does. He is in a good space. Mambo Come Tesio has a bit to do at the weights, he pulled up well from his last start, a stayer on the up.

Race 9: Bonete had a good comeback run last week, she came from the back of the field. She faces stronger now and this run comes just a week later, but I’ve seen no ill effects on her. Littlemarysunshine finished well in second last week, she is in a similar vein. Both are drawn wide, but worth considering.

Race 10: Woodland Glade ran fairly after a short rest last time. I think she still wants further and has come on from her last run. Maybe still just a bit short of her best, but include her. Spring In Heaven was very disappointing in her post-Maiden and I haven’t seen much improvement from her. She has a lot to do.
