South Africa will be looking to maintain their perfect T20 record against Bangladesh when the two teams meet at the Sydney Cricket Ground in the 2022 World Cup on Thursday, October 27.

The Proteas were unfortunate to only pick up a point in their tournament opener against neighbours Zimbabwe on Monday after the match in Hobart was washed out.

After a rain-delayed start, the Chevrons posted 79/5 in an innings that was reduced to nine overs, with Wayne Parnell the pick of the South African bowlers, having taken 1/6 in his two overs.

Mark Boucher's side wasted little time in making inroads on the 80-run target they were set and Quinton de Kock hit 47 off only 18 balls before rain stopped play for good.

Boucher admitted his frustration at coming so close to winning, but insisted they would rather be in this situation now where they can still control their own destiny.

"We haven't had a good history with rain," he said. "But we'd rather have it in the first game, now where we are still in control with what we can actually do.

"There's not much more we could do. We maximised what we could, so there's no regrets in our dressing room. We did what we could and unfortunately we just didn't get another 10 balls to get the job done."

The Tigers' opener against the Netherlands on Monday was also interrupted by rain, but their innings wasn't shortened and they scored 144/8 in 20 overs.

Taskin Ahmed put the Dutch on the back foot from the get-go as he took two wickets from his first two deliveries, finishing with a career-best 4/25 in four overs.

Bangladesh lead Group 2 ahead of India on net run rate, with the Proteas placed third, one point behind them.

Shakib Al Hasan hailed Taskin's match-winning performance and acknowledged they've come to realise how important pace bowling is in the T20 format.

"It was an important win, I've played all editions but haven't won," the Tigers captain said. "We were 10 runs short but the way our pacers bowled was tremendous.

"We understand the importance of fast bowling now, across formats. We've found talent, Hasan's [Mahmud] new, Taskin's developed well in the past few years.

"We want to be the best fielding side given we have a young team. We have the belief that we can save 5-10 runs which can make a big difference."
