2024-25 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 37
Atletico Madrid v Real Betis
Estadio Metropolitano
Madrid, Spain
Sunday, 18 May 2025
Kick-off is at 19h00
Real Betis will be seeking a rare
La Liga double over Atletico Madrid when they meet at the Estadio Metropolitano in the penultimate round of the season on Sunday, May 18.
Betis arrested a 10-game winless run against Los Colchoneros in the Spanish top flight after claiming a narrow 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture in Seville on October 27.
However, the Andalusian outfit haven't beaten Atleti twice in the same season since 2004-05, while the Madrid giants have achieved the feat seven times in the last 13 years.
Diego Simeone's side have now secured UEFA Champions League football and they routed Real Sociedad 4-0 on May 10 to open up a six-point gap to Athletic Bilbao (4th) in third place.
Atletico could potentially still finish runners-up though, as they are five points behind Real Madrid, who saw their title hopes dashed with a 4-3 defeat to arch-rivals Barcelona in the El Clasico derby on May 10.
Manuel Pellegrini's side are guaranteed at least Europa League football, but qualifying for the Champions League is not off the table yet as they look to challenge Villarreal for fifth spot.
Jan Oblak kept his 15th clean sheet of the campaign and is leading the race for the Zamora trophy, with Simeone indicating it is a consequence of the team's defensive strength.
"It is a consequence of the game, of what the team feels, of its strength. That's how we're growing defensively as a team, and we've scored quite a few goals," the Argentine said.
"It's not that they are thinking about helping for the Zamora trophy, but about helping the team not to concede and, consequently, we help Oblak to achieve the objective."
Betis also have the distraction of the UEFA Conference League final after beating Fiorentina 4-3 on aggregate in the semi-finals. Antony scored in both games and Pellegrini is hopeful that a deal can be done to keep the Brazilian in Seville.
"Antony is a unique player who contributes a lot, and we'll see what happens in the future. I have no doubt he'll do everything he can to stay," the Chilean said.
