2024-25 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 35
Athletic Bilbao v Alaves
San Mames
Bilbao, Spain
Sunday, 11 May 2025
Kick-off is at 18h30
UEFA Champions League football is still not a certainty for Athletic Bilbao as they prepare for the visit of Alaves to San Mames on Sunday, May 11.
The Lions currently occupy fourth place in
La Liga, but they are facing increasing pressure from Villarreal and Real Betis in the race for a top-five finish.
Ernesto Valverde's side have only picked up eight points from their last five matches and they shared the Basque derby spoils in a 0-0 draw with Real Sociedad most recently on May 4.
The Yellow Submarine (5th) and Betis (6th) both won on matchday 33 to close with three and four points respectively of Athletic with four games left to play.
The Babazorros boosted their survival hopes after holding Atletico Madrid to a goalless stalemate on May 3 which extended their unbeaten run to three games.
Eduardo Coudet's side have only lost one of their last five outings and they've opened up a three-point gap to the relegation zone in 17th position.
Back-to-back defeats for Las Palmas have seen them drop down to 18th spot and they're just one point above 19th-placed Leganes, who drew their last two matches.
Valverde feels the congested fixture schedule is starting to take its toll on his players after revealing that Oscar de Marcos and Nico Williams are struggling with injuries and are doubtful for their final few games.
"We have to see how De Marcos is after the other day and Nico, who won't be able to play because he's not well, having had this groin pain for a while," the Spaniard said.
"He's making an effort to be there but he's not well. He's feeling the effects of the season. He finished the other day very badly, yesterday he was also bad, today too.
"He's been making an effort to be here but it's been a while now and during the season it doesn't come without a hitch for everyone, all these games so close together.
"We'll see day by day to see if we can recover and manage well until the end of the season."
