Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes look to bounce back at Silverstone

2018 British Grand Prix

Formula 1, Round 10

8 July 2018 – 15h10 CAT
Silverstone Circuit, Silverstone

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes will be looking to bounce back to form at this weekend’s British Formula 1 Grand Prix, set for the Silverstone Circuit on Sunday, July 8, at 15h10 CAT.

Both Hamilton and the ‘Silver Arrows’ lost their places at the top of the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships respectively last weekend in Austria, as the German team suffered a double retirement.

This allowed Max Verstappen to claim a famous win at Red Bull’s home circuit, while a two-three finish for Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel saw Ferrari move to the top of the Constructors’ table. Vettel leads the Drivers’ log with 146 points, just one ahead of Hamilton.

Yet the see-saw battle for top spot is likely to change again, with Silverstone very much a happy hunting ground for Mercedes and Hamilton. The ‘Silver Arrows’ are chasing their sixth successive British Grand Prix win and Hamilton his fifth in a row (and sixth overall, which could put him ahead of Jim Clark and Alain Prost for all-time British GP wins).

Ferrari will look to challenge their rivals for ascendancy, but the ‘Scuderia’ have not tasted victory at Silverstone since 2011, while drivers Vettel and Raikkonen have only won the British GP once each. Team principal Maurizio Arrivabene has already admitted that they are expecting a tough weekend.

The Red Bulls may emerge as Mercedes’ main competition, with Verstappen on a high following his victory last weekend and Daniel Ricciardo a strong performer at Silverstone, while the Haas team will also look to keep up their impressive form after a sixth- and eighth-placed finish in Austria for Romain Gorsjean and Kevin Magnussen respectively.

This year’s British Grand Prix also sees the introduction of a third DRS zone to the Silverstone Circuit, which should further aid overtaking and make for a more exciting race on Sunday.
