Sunwolves Out to Slaughter Bulls in Singapore as Super Rugby Returns

Sunwolves vs Bulls

Super Rugby 2018

Saturday June 30th
Kick-off at 13:55 (1:55pm) SA time
Singapore National Stadium, Singapore

Super Rugby returns to our screens with a bang this weekend with a local South African derby on Saturday headlining a jam-packed schedule.

The Sunwolves have struggled for much of this season, especially on their travels where they are still searching for their first victory, but they had managed to find some home form prior to the international break.

The Japanese outfit are coming into this clash off the back of consecutive defeats on tour in Australia, shipping 40 points against the Brumbies and Rebels respectively, however are unbeaten in their last two matches played at the Chichibunoyima Rugby Stadium, putting 60 points past a hapless Reds before a nail-biting thriller against the Stormers, the Sunwolves coming out on top by just a three-point margin – the bottom side’s first wins of the campaign.

The Bulls have won just one of their last five outings heading into this weekend’s encounter and despite playing some beautiful attacking rugby at times this season, have often failed to capitalise on their efforts by turning performances into points. The Pretoria based side have won just five of their 13 matches played thus far with just a solitary victory away from Loftus Versveld in six attempts – over the Sharks back in April, meaning the three-time champions are yet to taste success outside South African shores since beating the Western Force 42-20 in April 2016. They are currently bottom of the South African conference but could still mathematically make the playoffs but would need a miracle and to at least avoid defeat this weekend, for starters.

Saturday’s affair will be the first time that the pair will face each other this season and the fifth time since the Sunwolves inception into Super Rugby in 2016. The Bulls have had tough times on their trips to the far east and will have rather unpleasant memories that they will be looking to erase from their last visit there, when Yu Tamara’s last-gasp penalty, five minutes from time, handed the Tokyo based team an historic success, their first win of the season, and first-ever victory against a South African side.
