No. 26 seed Alexander Zverev is hoping to go one step further this year when he does battle with Casper Ruud in the
French Open semi-finals on Friday, June 9.
The German also reached the last four on the Paris clay in 2021 and 2022 but saw his challenge halted by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Rafael Nadal respectively - the latter due to injury after tearing his ankle ligaments in the second set.
Zverev has yet to make a final appearance in 2023, with his best performances coming in the Dubai Tennis Championships and the Geneva Open, where he fell at the semi-final stages.
The 26-year-old is now looking to contest the second Grand Slam final of his career, having come up just short in 2020 when he lost to Dominic Thiem in five sets at the US Open.
Zverev leads Ruud 2-1 in head-to-head encounters, although the Norwegian won their most recent meeting in the quarter-finals of the 2022 Miami Open.
The world No. 27 ended Tomas Martin Etcheverry's surprise run to the quarter-finals with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory and expressed his delight at qualifying for a third successive semi-final at Roland Garros after admitting to going through some struggles following his season-ending injury last year.
"That was the most difficult year of my life," he said. "I love tennis with all my heart. I'm so happy to be back at this stage, I'm so happy to be able to play for a Roland Garros final again. I can't be happier."
