Gunners On Course For Carabao Cup Hammering?

Less than a week after David Moyes’ side held Arsenal to a rather important 0-0 draw in the Premier League, the pair lock horns once again in the quarter-finals of this seasons’ Carabao Cup.

Arsenal vs West Ham United

Tuesday, December 19th
The Emirates Stadium, London

Kick-off at 19:45 (7:45pm) GMT

The Gunners responded to those dropped points in midweek with 1-0 home win over Newcastle United on Saturday courtesy of a sublime Mesut Ozil strike. This was their first win in four outings in England’s top-flight since they swept Huddersfield aside 5-0 at the end of November. For all their attacking prowess however, Arsenal are struggling for goals having netted just three times in the league since the start of December, despite managing to slot six unanswered goals past BATE Borisov in their final UEFA Europa League tie.

Arsenal recent results:

16/12/2017 – Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle
13/12/2017 – West Ham 0-0 Arsenal
10/12/2017 – Southampton 1-1 Arsenal
07/12/2017 – Arsenal 6-0 BATE
02/12/2017 – Arsenal 1-3 Man United
29/11/2017 – Arsenal 5-0 Huddersfield

David Moyes has seen his West Ham side spring into life at just the right time in the season. Since back-to-back defeats away to Everton and Manchester City respectively, the Hammers have kept three consecutive clean sheets, picking up seven points from a possible nine in the league with that midweek stalemate against Arsenal coupled with hugely impressive victories at home over defending champions Chelsea and most recently away at Stoke City. This remarkable run has seen them rise out of the relegation zone ahead of their third London derby in ten days.

West Ham United recent results:

16/12/2017 – Stoke 0-3 West Ham
13/12/2017 – West Ham 0-0 Arsenal
09/12/2017 – West Ham 1-0 Chelsea
03/12/2017 – Man City 2-1 West Ham
29/11/2017 – Everton 4-0 West Ham
24/11/2017 – West Ham 1-1 Leicester

Arsenal’s path into the last eight has been slightly more straight-forward than West Ham’s. The Hammers began life in the Carabao Cup back in the second round in August and after easing past lower league opposition, came up against the other half of North London as they made their way to Wembley to take on Tottenham when three second-half goals sealed a stunning comeback and 3-2 victory for the visitors. Arsenal on the other hand had the grace of going straight into the third-round draw where they had to work to beat a stubborn Doncaster Rovers side before a comeback of their own in the round of 16 against Championship outfit Norwich City.

Arsenal Carabao Cup results:

20/09/2017 – Arsenal 1-0 Doncaster (3rd round)
24/10/2017 – Arsenal 2-1 Norwich (last 16)

West Ham United Carabao Cup results:

23/08/2017 – Cheltenham 0-2 West Ham (2nd round)
19/09/2017 – West Ham 3-0 Bolton (3rd round)
25/10/2017 – Tottenham 2-3 West Ham (last 16)

West Ham have won just once in their last 20 attempts against Arsenal since they became the first team ever to walk away with a victory from the Emirates Stadium in April 2007, losing on 15 occasions including defeat in the third-round of the FA Cup in January 2010. That victory came on the opening day in August 2015 when Cheikhou Kouyate and Mauro Zarate both scored in 2-0 win for the visiting Hammers.

Arsenal vs West Ham United recent head-to-head:

13/12/2017 – West Ham 0-0 Arsenal
05/04/2017 – Arsenal 3-0 West Ham
03/12/2016 – West Ham 1-5 Arsenal
09/04/2016 – West Ham 3-3 Arsenal
