Mamelodi Sundowns vs Polokwane City

Tuesday, February 19th
Loftus Versveld Stadium, Pretoria
Kick-off expected at 19:30 (7:30pm) CAT

Mamelodi Sundowns will go top of the ABSA Premiership if they manage to beat Polokwane City by at least two-goal margin when the teams clash at Loftus on Tuesday.

Will Masandawana be able to do the business against a side that have proven to be rather stubborn opponents this season or will ‘Rise and Shine’ make a rapid ascent up the standings?

Pitso Mosimane’s men resumed their continental campaign with a 0-0 draw away to ASEC Mimosa on matchday 4 in the CAF Champions League – their first dropped points in the competition since defeat to Lobi Stars on matchday 1.

Domestically, the Brazilians have won four matches out of five played in the ABSA Premiership since the start of 2019, coupled with a shock defeat to Chippa United in the Nedbank Cup round of 32. They bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Amazulu in the league by comfortably beating Black Leopards 3-0 last time out.

Lebohang Maboe opened the scoring for Masandawana in that encounter bagging his fifth goal of the campaign.

Polokwane City have registered just two victories from their last eight matches in all competitions and head into Tuesday’s affair without a win in three, despite managing to find the back of the net a total of 15 goals in the process at an average of nearly 2 goals per game.

Following their Nedbank Cup exit at the hands of National First Division outfit Milano United, their PSL fixture against Free State Stars was postponed due to inclement weather and bad light meaning by the time that Jozef Vukusic’s side took to the field once again, against the team sitting bottom of the league - Maritzburg United, they had been without competitive action in over two weeks.

It proved to be a hinderance rather than a helping hand as they were convincingly beaten 3-1 – their first defeat in the league from their last five matches in the division since midway through December.

Polokwane City recent results: (all competitions)

08/02/2019 – Maritzburg 3-1 Polokwane
23/01/2019 – Polokwane 1-2 Milano (Cup)
20/01/2019 – Polokwane 3-3 Wits
05/01/2019 – Polokwane 3-2 Amazulu

Sundowns currently sit second on the log just three points behind Bidvest Wits albeit having played three games fewer although they can leapfrog the leaders, on goal difference, if they manage to win by two goals or more against Polokwane City on Tuesday.

They managed to win the reverse fixture 2-0 back in August thanks to goals by Ricardo Nascimento and Lebohang Maboe, ending a run of three games without a win against Rise and Shine, however, Sundowns have not beaten City in any of their last three meetings at home.

The corresponding fixture last season ended 2-1 to the visitors as Rodney Ramagalela scored either side of a George Lebese penalty for the home side, while the two encounters prior to that both ended in goalless stalemates.
