South Africa v India

St George's Park
Gqeberha, South Africa
Tuesday, 19 December 2023

South Africa will be determined to bounce back from their poor showing in Johannesburg when they face India in the second ODI at St George's Park on Tuesday, December 19.

The Proteas were dismissed for just 116 at the Wanderers on December 17 - their lowest-ever total on home soil - as the Men in Blue romped to a comfortable 8-wicket victory in the first ODI.

Opener Tony de Zorzi (28) and all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo (33) were the only two batters to score over 20, while Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen and Wiaan Mulder all failed to get off the mark.

Arshdeep Singh (5/37) and Avesh Khan (4/27) took nine wickets between them to help India dismiss the hosts in the 28th over and they needed just 16.4 overs to reach the target of 117.

B Sai Sudharsan (55 n.o.) and Shreyas Iyer (52) guided Raul Dravid's side to a comfortable victory and a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

SA captain Aiden Markram felt the opposition bowlers exploited the conditions really well early on to put them under pressure, but denied suggestions that the Proteas misread the pitch.

"Tough one," Markram said in the post-match presentation. "We would've liked to put on a really good score batting first.

"Credit to their bowling attack with the lateral movement. We weren't even [able] to settle and build partnership. Problem right from the start and couldn't pull things back.

"We expected it to go around a little bit. Generally in the day games it does do something for 5-7 overs, we've seen that before. But today it went along for longer and we couldn't get in and build partnerships."

Singh admitted to being unprepared for the altitude on the Highveld as he bowled his full compliment of 10 overs for the first time in an ODI.

"I had no idea [what to expect]," the left-arm seamer said after the game. "I only came to know about it in three or four overs when I was running out of breath.

"The plan was to just keep it simple, hit good areas, extract some bounce and look for a little movement off the seam. We knew if we could get movement inside or outside of the bat, we could get nicks or lbws.

"That was the plan: to keep it simple and challenge the batters to score off tough balls."
