Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Turffontein

Mike de Kock has won the G1 Fillies Guineas at Kenilworth three times, starting with Emerald Beauty (2003), and followed by Rumya (2012) and Majmu (2014). He’s also posted a few seconds in this three-year-old classic. Workmanlike Silver Sanctuary does not come into Saturday’s 2023 renewal with the same glittering reputation, but she doesn’t lack quality and having won over a mile twice in five career starts puts her in the eachway value category at Betway’s current quoted, ante-post price of 7.5-1.

The Betway Ambassador is in Cape Town and will be saddling the blood sister to Safe Passage in a race where there is plenty of pace around and a fast clip will suit Silver Sanctuary, who invariably does her best work late in her races and will be running at them.

Mike said: “She travelled very well and it will be good to see how she goes against the leading locals. She’s not out of it, she’s game and tries hard, and is worth including in your play.”

He sent last week’s Summer Cup runner Aragosta to the Cape alongside Silver Sanctuary for the Summer Stayers and said: “He was short of peak fitness last week, as we reported, but ran a good race to Royal Victory, staying on. He came out of the race so well we decided to raid and give the stayers contest a go. He travelled well too, seems to like Richard Fourie’s handling and I’d put him into exotics, for sure.”

The next Highveld race meeting takes place on the standside track at Turffontein next Tuesday, 5 December. Mike has entered six runners for the eight-race programme and there could be a winner or two among them.
Spring In Heaven (Race 4, 1800m), ran two much improved races when unfancied recently and she looks to be near her best now. Mike commented: “She seems to have come into a good vein of form and has a money chance.”

Courageous Cat (Race 5, 1600m) needed his penultimate after a long rest, but showed in his course and distance outing a fortnight ago that he, too, is approaching winning form. “We’ve always rated him, as noted before, and his last run was encouraging as he was plugging away, trying to get onto terms over the last 200m. I like where he is at, he is getting to where I want him to be and should give a good account of himself.”

Sharapova (Race 6, 1600m) is overdue her second career win. She has been fancied a number of times but has found a few to beat her. Perhaps her half-sister Gimme A Nother’s win in last Saturday’s Betway Fillies Mile was a good omen and Mike said: “Sharapova is in good shape, working well. We’re trying a mile with her, based on her last 1400m run she might prefer a mile now, she was running on. She should be right up there at the finish.”

Simple Simple (Race 7, 1160m), has been racing over slightly further against slightly stronger and is another that looks to be close to her next victory. Mike said: “She gets into the action most of the time and perhaps with Richard up she can get her head in front over the shorter trip. Eachway prospects.”

Arividicio and Tayooba will do battle for the stable in Race 8 over 1160m, the former also dropping in distance. Mike commented: “Arividicio is on a competitive mark now, he has dropped from the high 90s to a MR81 and I’d like to see how he goes down the straight here, he is a fair sort of horse. Tayooba is working well and she has a good draw. I think she will run the way she’s been working. Include both.”
