Basement Boys Braced For Battle

Bidvest Wits will resume their ABSA Premiership journey when they welcome Supersport United to the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening.

Bidvest Wits vs Supersport United
Wednesday, January 10th 2018
Bidvest Stadium, Johannesburg
Kick-off at 19:30 (7:30pm) local time

The defending champions are surely eager to return to duty as they attempt to salvage something from what has been a sorry season so far for the Clever Boys, who stunned South Africa when they hoisted the PSL trophy aloft last May. They ended 2017 on a sour note with defeat at home to fellow strugglers Platinum Stars. The festive period brought little reprieve and the new year returned with the same old problems, as Gavin Hunt’s men slipped up once again in front of their adoring fans by the same 1-0 scoreline, this time to Free State Stars, a result which leaves them without a win in their last seven in the league.

Bidvest Wits recent results: (league only)

05/01/2018 – Wits 0-1 FS Stars
16/12/2017 – Wits 0-1 Platinum Stars
09/12/2017 – Polokwane City 1-1 Wits
06/12/2017 – Wits 0-0 Ajax CT
25/11/2017 – Maritzburg 0-0 Wits
21/11/2017 – Wits 0-2 Sundowns

Matsatsantsa find themselves in 12th position on the log after 12 games played, four fewer than the majority of teams in the league after their continental escapades where they reached the CAF Confederations Cup final in 2017. Despite their strong showing in Africa, their domestic form has stuttered. The 0-0 draw with Kaizer Chiefs at the weekend, while it brought with it some positives, it still leaves Supersport seeking their first victory in seven attempts on Wednesday.

Supersport United recent results: (league only)

06/01/2018 – Supersport 0-0 Chiefs

09/12/2017 – Supersport 1-1 Cape Town City
05/12/2017 – Pirates 0-0 Supersport

Despite outplaying the rest of the ABSA Premiership last season, Bidvest Wits suffered successive league defeats to Supersport United in 2016/17, who did the double over the eventual champions accounting for over 30% of their total defeats all campaign. The Students have won just four of their last 10 home matches against Supersport in the league, although they have won three of the last four to be played at the Bidvest Stadium. Thuso Phala’s solitary strike sealed all three points for the visitors in the corresponding fixture last season.
