Wednesday’s action in the Betway Premiership is headlined by co-leaders Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns – with the former looking to keep up their momentum, while the latter must respond strongly to a weekend cup defeat.
Chiefs and Sundowns enter the midweek Matchday 4 tied at the top of the Betway Premiership log with reigning champions Orlando Pirates and AmaZulu FC (all on seven points from a possible nine).
A ‘top-of-the-table’ clash between Sundowns and AmaZulu at Loftus Versfeld Stadium is an enticing prospect, with the Brazilians looking to bounce back from a surprise 1-0 defeat at the hands of Golden Arrows in the MTN8 this past weekend.
“It’s time to learn how to deal with these situations obviously, otherwise you cannot continue to dominate the game and suffer from a simple action,” said Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso.
At the same time in Durban, Richards Bay will look to halt the early-season momentum of Chiefs, who are looking to establish themselves as credible title contenders – though they must do so amid a worsening injury crisis.
“All the left-backs are injured,” said Amakhosi coach Fernando Da Cruz. “We were unlucky in the last few days in the left full-back position.
“Between the Sekhukhune United game and Saturday, we lost two more players to injury, who are Reeve (Frosler) and Kabelo (Nkgwesa).”
Wednesday also features Golden Arrows hosting Stellenbosch FC at the king Zwelithini Stadium; and surprise packages Milford FC chasing a third win from their first four matches when they visit Polokwane City.
