The theme for the 2025 Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup was unveiled as ‘Jozi Rising’ earlier this week. The richest race in South Africa and Gauteng’s premier race day is worth R6-million, and will be staged at Turffontein on Saturday, 29 November.
“Betway is proud to continue our partnership with 4Racing and the Summer Cup. We have a fresh theme and renewed purpose,” said Jonathan Blumberg, Head of Customer Experience at Betway. “Our country has a long and rich history with horse racing and we see this event as an opportunity to continue connecting with fans, supporting the sport, and contributing to a day that reflects the vibrancy of the city.”
Betway will be joined this year as event partners by BET Africa (DStv channel 129), New Turf Carriers, TAB, Racing 240, Racing Today and Ticketpro.
Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock and Mathew de Kock will be well represented on the big day. After a customary quiet August, the stable will be sending out more runners in the next few months in preparation for the Betway Summer Cup and the features on the undercard.
This is a time of year when the stable traditionally enjoys a fruitful run into the summer season and their runners need to be well considered, as always.
M&M have entered five for the meeting at
Turffontein’s inside track on Saturday, and Mathew provided comments:
Race 2, 1000m: “
Miami Mountain is a nice newcomer by Canford Cliffs. He has been been showing us some good work at home. The 1000m on the inside track is tricky, you can’t afford to be green. He has an inside draw and if he can overcome his greenness, first-up, he’ll certainly have an eachway chance.”
Race 4, 1000m: “
The Abdicator has been quite problematic to train. He is not easy, not a straight forward horse. We moved him from KZN to Randjesfontein, he has been in Joburg for the last two months. We’ve been trying a few different things with him at the track for the last several weeks. He is well, but we’re not sure what to expect
.” (Mojo Man has been withdrawn).
Race 5, 1600m: “We’re putting cheek pieces on
Wecangoallnight. He has been somewhat disappointing, seems to wander around in his races so we’re hoping the cheek pieces will help him to focus. He is a capable horse. If the cheek pieces have the desired effect, he’ll be involved, so he can’t be ignored.”
Race 7, 1450m: “
Destiny Of Fire ran a great race last time, she looked a winner for a long time and just got run out of it late. She’s come on from that, she’s in good form. If it wasn’t for her sluggishness out of the gates, I’d say she was our best of the day. But a lot depends on her behaviour at the gates when they jump.”
Race 8, 1450m: “
Great Notion will also be racing with cheek pieces for the first time. Back against her own sex, she has a chance of finishing in the money and should run well.”
HWB Scottsville, Sunday:
“We have
Buddy Boy (Race 1, 1200m) and then
Sunnybills Ferrari and Cheerscheerscheers both in Race 2 over 1400m. Our comments for all three first-time runners are the same: They’re all in the same boat. We think they will need their runs and racing experience. They will all improve with their first runs behind them. They can possibly get into fourth places for back end of Quartets.”
Race 6, 1750m: “
Trois Trois Quatre is doing well in his home gallops. This is a bit short of his best distance, but he always tries hard and has eachway claims.
