2025-26 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 1
Villarreal v Real Oviedo
Estadio de la Ceramica
Villarreal, Spain
Friday, 15 August 2025
Kick-off is at 21h30
Villarreal are set to host Real Oviedo at La Ceramica for the first time in 25 years when they meet on the opening day of the new
La Liga season on Friday, August 15.
Los Azules last visited Villarreal during the 2000-01 campaign when they were relegated after finishing 18th and have spent the next 24 years navigating the lower leagues.
The Yellow Submarine won the corresponding fixture that season 1-0 and they also ran out 3-1 victors at the Estadio Carlos Tartiere to extend their unbeaten record to four matches.
Marcelino's side qualified for the UEFA Champions League last term as they won their final five games to finish in fifth place, level with Athletic Bilbao on 70 points but behind them on goal difference.
The Castellon outfit have signed Santiago Mourino (Atletico Madrid), Rafa Marin (Napoli), Thomas Partey (Arsenal), Tajon Buchanan (Inter Milan) and Alberto Moleiro (Las Palmas), while Alex Baena (Atletico Madrid), Thierno Barry (Everton), Andres Ferrari (Sint-Truiden) and Jorge Pascual (Granada) have all been sold.
Real Oviedo earned promotion via the playoffs after beating Mirandes 3-2 on aggregate in the final, having finished third in La Liga 2 last term, four points adrift of champions Levante.
The Asturias club have yet to beat Villarreal in the Spanish top flight, with their first two encounters during the 1998-99 campaign both ending goalless.
Reflecting on 2024-25, Marcelino said: "It has been a great season. I couldn't pick out just one moment. Of course, the match against FC Barcelona comes to mind, because it secured our place in the Champions League.
"But so do the wins over Betis and Girona, because of what they meant to the team emotionally. What matters most is that we knew how to overcome difficult moments."
