Tony Finau will be keen to become the second golfer to win back-to-back
Northern Trust titles after golf legend Ernie Els.
The American star won last year's tournament after beating Cameron Smith in a playoff - clinching his second PGA Tour title in the process.
Finau is probably the most in-form golfer in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season at the moment having won two of the last three tournaments.
The Utah-born golfer won the 3M Open last month having trailed tournament leader Scott Piercy by five shots and second-place Emiliano Grillo by one when the final round began.
Everything turned on the back nine when Piercy shot a final-round 76 with a back-nine 41 while Finau shot a final-round 67 with a 33 on the back nine that include a bogey 6 at the last.
One week later, Finau, who is nicknamed Big Tone, won the Rocket Mortgage Classic for back-to-back victories and it was also his fourth title on the PGA Tour,
The Big Tone is now placed 13th on the Official World Golf Rankings and he will be going to win Northern Trust in order to boost his hopes of moving into the top 10.
“They say a winner is just a loser that just kept on trying, and that’s me to a T,” Finau said after winning the 2022 Robert Morgage Classic.
“How many times do I lose? But one thing I won’t do is give up, and I’m only here as a winner because I chose not to give up and just keep going.
"One of my goals would be to be a multiple winner on Tour this season - to be able to accomplish that is amazing."
Vijay Singh is the most decorated golfer in the history of The Northern Trust having won four titles in 1993, 1995, 2006 and 2008.
