Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Turffontein and Kenilworth

There’s plenty of excellent local and international racing this weekend including the second and third days of Aintree’s jump-racing showpiece featuring the world’s most famous steeplechase, and a flagship meeting at Randwick in Sydney on which you can bet in Hong Kong’s World Pool tote. You can participate via Betway’s Tote portal – remember the betting on the meeting starts at 4:45am on Saturday. You are virtually guaranteed well above average returns, and if you place your bets through us, as always, your 6% betting tax is returned at the end of the month – reflecting automatically in your accounts.

Locally, Saturday offers a double header at Turffontein and Hollywoodbets Kenilworth, with a meeting at Scottsville on Sunday. There are no outstanding bankers at either meeting on Saturday, which presents a greater likelihood of substantial payouts.

Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock has offered some pointers to the meeting at Turffontein, where he has entered five runners:

Race 2, 1160m: “Khethiwe’s Destiny is a nice filly by Buffalo Bill Cody. We haven’t pushed her hard for this first start, but I do expect her to be competitive because she is quite a speedy sort. VJ’s Angel was impressive when winning last time and looks hard to beat.”

Race 5, 1600m: “East Coast ran below his best last time, but his rating is too high as it is. He is perhaps better suited to the shorter distance, we’ll see. Hoping to see something better from him.”

Race 6, 1600m: “Two nice fillies here. Sea Anemone is in a good space, she is doing very well and should maintain her level of form, a good run is expected. Sharapova returned from a rest last time and ran well when she needed it a bit. She has a handy galloping weight and should be competitive off that. I’d include both fillies in the exotic bets.

Race 7, 1100m: “Gocekwithlove is a nice filly, I like her. She is going to win her share of races and we give her a chance here. Don’t ignore, she is one to keep an eye on.”

Kenilworth:
Justin Snaith’s Innamarore could be the right horse in the Taking The Reins Handicap over 1600m. He is unbeaten in two early career runs over the mile and is handily weighted. His danger is Solomons Seal, who finished well when getting within half-a-length of beating promising San Pedro just recently. The Eric Sands gelding is better when ridden from off the pace, a strategy which may be employed again. He, too, is likely to enjoy the trip and looks well weighted.

Scottsville:
Trainer Dean Kannemeyer spoke highly of Ponte Pietra on his return to the track after a rest for the Jamaica Stakes at Kenilworth on 24 February. While he drifted in the betting that day, Ponte Pietra ran on strongly and caught the eye of punters and the stipendiary stewards, who felt that jockey Craig Zackey left his finishing effort too late. They reprimanded him for not being vigorous enough in the first part of the run-in. Back to his favourite Hollywoodbets Scottsville track for Sunday’s Listed WSB Sledgehammer over 1750m, probably a few lengths better for his comeback run and re-united with Zackey, Ponte Pietra is expected to show the benefits of that experience. He’s the only course-and-distance winner in the race and should be too good for his five rivals.

Aintree:
Gordon Elliot’s Found A Fifty will be hard to beat in the My Pension Expert Maghull Novices' Chase (Grade 1) at the Saturday meeting. He was second in the recent Arkle Challenge at the Cheltenham Festival and the third horse, Il Etait Temps, won a Grade 1 race at Aintree on Friday.
