2nd Test
South Africa v Bangladesh
St George's Park
Port Elizabeth, South Africa
8-12 April 2022

Bangladesh will be looking to level the two-match Test series against South Africa when they take to the field at St George's Park on Friday, April 8.

The Tigers were bowled out for a measly 53 on the fifth day of the first Test at Kingsmead in Durban after being set a target of 274.

The Proteas played two spinners in a home test for the first time since 1970 and it paid off handsomely as Keshav Maharaj and Simon Harmer took seven wickets each in the match.

The duo combined for all 10 wickets in the second innings - a feat never achieved before by two South African bowlers. Maharaj was named Man of the Match for his figures of 7/32 in the second innings.

Temba Bavuma top scored for the hosts in the first innings with 93 runs as they made 367, while Mahmudul Hasan Joy's impressive 137 helped Bangladesh to a total of 298.

Harmer was the pick of the Proteas bowlers with figures of 4/103 and Mark Boucher's men posted 204 in the second innings, with captain Dean Elgar's 63 the highlight.

Elgar was full of praise for Maharaj and Harmer, claiming they would have caused any team in the world problems with their bowling.

"How awesome was it to see two spin bowlers bowling in tandem and have it on a string and absolutely dominate the opposition," he said. "It was great to see both of them competing at such a high level.

"Most batting line-ups would have had a tough ask against them. The pure skill level and intensity they brought along with their consistency was amazing to witness."

The Tigers have yet to beat the Proteas in 13 attempts but skipper Mominul Haque is backing them to bounce back in Port Elizabeth.

Haque felt they competed well for four of the five days in the first Test before succumbing to spin.

"We can certainly bounce back from this defeat," Haque declared. "We played well in four out of the five days. We batted poorly in the last few overs yesterday and on the fifth day.

"There are enough positives to take from this Test match, to suggest to me that we can bounce back easily in the next game.

"We didn't play badly for all five days. We just had a bad fifth day, but as everyone knows, it is difficult to get back from a Test after you slip once. I think we can come back into the series by being mentally strong."
