As the ABSA Premiership takes a back-seat this weekend, all eyes across South Africa will be glued to their TV screens for the highly anticipated 2018 Telkom Knockout semi-finals. First up on Saturday is the ever-enthralling Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates that will be played in Durban’s iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium for the first time in four years.

The Glamour Boys will be gleaming at the prospect of a first cup final under new head coach Giovanni Solinas – something which the Soweto side failed to achieve in the three years prior with Steve Khompela at the helm.

Despite their stuttering start to the 2018/19 season which has seen Amakhosi pick up just four wins from their first 13 league games, including defeat in the first derby of the season last month, Kaizer Chiefs head into this encounter in good form having bounced back from that loss against Pirates by picking up two wins and a draw, keeping three clean sheets in the process.

Kaizer Chiefs recent results: (all competitions)

27/10/2018 – Pirates 2-1 Chiefs
21/10/2018 – Chiefs 1-1 Leopards* (TKO – R1)
*Kaizer Chiefs won 4-2 on penalties.

The Buccaneers are flying high in the ABSA Premiership and currently lead Bidvest Wits at the top of the table as they continue on their quest to improve on last season’s second-place finish, ultimately missing out on the title by just five points to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Milutin Sredojevic’s side saw their four-match winning streak slashed by Sundowns before the international break, however the Sea Robbers remain unbeaten in their last 11 matches in all competitions since suffering bruising back-to-back defeats against Wits and Celtic respectively in their opening two matches of the campaign.

When the pair met at a packed FNB Stadium last month – a venue unavailable this weekend due to an scheduled prayer gathering organised by the Motsepe Foundation – Khama Billiat gave the ‘visitors’ the lead in what was classified as a Pirates home game before two goals in the space of three minutes from Innocent Maela and Vincent Pule respectively turned the tie in their favour for their second successive victory over their near neighbours.

Chiefs have not beaten Pirates in the league in their last nine encounters since a 2-0 win in December 2014, following on from their 1-0 MTN8 final success over them, at Moses Mabhida Stadium just three months earlier. They then dumped their fiercest rivals out of the Telkom Knockout Cup at the at the same stage when they clashed in the semi-finals in 2015 with Chiefs walking away winners after a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout victory eventually separating the teams.
