2026 Formula 1 World Championship

Formula 1 returns from its summer break for the Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort on Sunday 23 August, with Kimi Antonelli carrying the weight of championship leadership – and a growing belief that he can become the sport’s next superstar.

The Mercedes teenager arrives in the Netherlands with 219 points, 50 clear of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and 59 ahead of teammate George Russell. Reigning champion Lando Norris remains a major threat on 218 points, while Charles Leclerc sits fifth on 138. Mercedes also lead the constructors’ championship with 379 points, ahead of Ferrari on 307.

Antonelli has already produced a remarkable six victories in 2026, triumphing in China, Japan, Miami, Canada, Monaco and Belgium. His Spa victory before the summer break was particularly significant, as he recovered the lead after Charles Leclerc’s pit stop and controlled the closing stages to underline his title credentials.

Now comes the challenge of maintaining that momentum. Zandvoort’s 4.259km layout, 14 corners and 72 laps provide a demanding test, with its fast, flowing nature and banked corners leaving little room for error. This weekend also introduces a Sprint, giving Antonelli extra opportunities to score points – but also extra opportunities for rivals to close the gap.

Crucially, Antonelli appears to have changed his relationship with pressure. Reflecting on his rookie campaign in 2025, he admitted: “I let the pressure kind of destroy me. I felt like I was letting down so many people who believed in me, especially Toto Wolff.”

Now, with a championship within reach, his mindset is different: “I've been trying to embrace the pressure and actually shine under pressure... When you're under pressure, it means you know that you can do something very good.”

Zandvoort will provide the latest test of that maturity – and another opportunity for Antonelli to strengthen his grip on the world championship.
