Poker is a
card game in which players compete for a central pot made up of bets placed during a hand. There are several poker variants, including Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Seven Card Stud, with each game having its own rules.
This guide focuses on Texas Hold’em, one of the most widely played forms of poker and a straightforward starting point for beginners. The basic objective is to make the strongest possible five-card hand or persuade every other active player to fold. Rules, betting structures and available stakes can vary, so always check the specific game before playing.
What Is the Objective of Poker?
The objective of poker is to win the pot, which contains the chips or money wagered during the hand.
There are two main ways to win:
- Showdown: Hold the strongest five-card poker hand when the remaining players reveal their cards.
- Other players fold: Remain as the only active player after all opponents have folded.
This means a player does not necessarily need the strongest cards to win a hand. However, beginners should first concentrate on understanding the rules, betting actions and hand rankings before exploring more advanced strategies.
How Does Texas Hold’em Work?
In Texas Hold’em, each player receives two private cards, known as hole cards. Five community cards are then placed face-up in the centre of the table during the hand.
All active players can use the community cards when building their hands. Each player makes the strongest possible five-card combination from their two hole cards and the five community cards available.
A player can use both hole cards, just one, or neither of them. Only the best five-card combination counts.
For example, if the community cards already form a player's strongest possible five-card hand, both private cards may effectively be left out of the final combination.
Poker Betting Actions
During a Texas Hold’em hand, players have several possible betting actions.
Check: Remain in the hand without adding another bet. A check is only possible when there is no current bet that needs to be matched.
Bet: Place the first wager during a betting round.
Call: Match the current highest bet to remain in the hand.
Raise: Increase the amount of the current bet. Other active players must then call the new amount, raise again or fold.
Fold: Give up the hand and any claim to the current pot. Chips already placed in the pot are normally not returned.
All-in: Commit all remaining chips to the hand. This can happen when a player wants to wager their entire remaining stack.
The actions available can depend on the betting structure of the particular poker game.
The Stages of a Poker Hand
A standard Texas Hold’em hand follows several stages:
- Blinds: The two players to the left of the dealer position normally post the small blind and big blind. These forced bets start the pot.
- Pre-flop: Each player receives two private cards, followed by the first betting round.
- The flop: Three community cards are placed face-up, followed by another betting round.
- The turn: A fourth community card is revealed and another betting round takes place.
- The river: The fifth and final community card is revealed before the last betting round.
- The showdown: If two or more players remain, they reveal their cards and the strongest five-card hand wins the pot.
A hand can finish before the showdown if every player except one folds. In that situation, the remaining player wins the pot without needing to reveal their cards.
Poker Hand Rankings
Learning the standard poker hand rankings is essential for beginners. From strongest to weakest, they are:
- Royal Flush: Ace, King, Queen, Jack and 10 of the same suit.
- Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank.
- Full House: Three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank.
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit that are not consecutive.
- Straight: Five consecutive cards containing more than one suit.
- Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank.
- Two Pair: Two separate pairs.
- One Pair: Two cards of the same rank.
- High Card: A hand that does not form any of the combinations above.
Only the strongest five-card combination counts. If two players have hands in the same category, the values of their cards and, where applicable, their kickers can determine the winner. If the strongest five-card hands are identical, the pot may be divided between the tied players.
One important exception to remember is the ace-low straight: A-2-3-4-5 is a valid straight, with the five acting as the highest card in that combination.
What to Check Before Playing Poker
Before joining a poker game, review the rules and conditions carefully. In particular, check:
- The poker variant being played.
- Minimum and maximum stakes.
- Blind amounts.
- The betting structure, such as no-limit, pot-limit or fixed-limit.
- Table or tournament rules.
- How ties and split pots are handled.
- Whether you are playing against other players or the house.
- Any time limits applying to player decisions.
For South African players, the available games, stakes, payment methods and terms can differ between operators and platforms, so check the relevant information before depositing or playing.
Poker Tips for Beginners
A few simple habits can help new players understand the game:
- Learn the hand rankings before playing for money.
- Start with lower stakes that fit a predetermined budget.
- Do not assume every starting hand is worth playing.
- Pay attention to the community cards and the combinations they can create.
- Understand when checking, calling, raising and folding are allowed.
- Avoid chasing losses or increasing stakes impulsively.
- Never assume a strong starting hand guarantees a win.
Poker involves uncertainty, and even strong hands can lose. Understanding the rules is therefore more important than relying on any particular betting system.
Play Poker Responsibly
Learning how to play poker can make the game easier to understand, but knowing the rules cannot guarantee winning results. Poker involves financial risk, and outcomes can vary from hand to hand.
Set a spending limit and a time limit before you start and stick to them. Take regular breaks and never chase losses by increasing your stakes in an attempt to recover money already lost. Only play with money you can afford to lose.
