Sampdoria struck one of the major upsets last weekend when they thumped Lazio 3-0 at home, with goals from the ageless Fabio Quagliarella, Tommaso Augello and Mikkel Damsgaard, and a second straight win over a ‘heavy hitter’ would be an impressive feat.
“Naturally, Lazio were missing several important players, so it was not their best line-up, but we still played with real courage and confidence,” said manager Claudio Ranieri. “I think this 3-0 victory allows us to forget the defeat to Benevento. We signed some more experienced players this summer and want to avoid suffering the way we did last season.”
Atalanta will be looking to recover from a 4-1 defeat at the hands of an in-form Napoli, a result which broke a run of three straight wins at the start of the season for La Dea.
“It’s a wake-up call in all respects, technical, tactical, and athletic. Napoli were superior. Today was one of those days, we have to learn and see how to recover,” said manager Gian Piero Gasperini. “I never said we are title contenders, we have to play and see what we are capable of doing.”
