How to play Baccarat

Baccarat is a casino card game played between two hands known as the Player and Banker. Before the cards are dealt, you predict which hand will finish with the highest total, or whether the two hands will Tie.
Despite the names, you do not control either hand. Betting on Banker does not mean that you become the dealer or casino. Instead, the Player and Banker labels identify the two hands in the game.
The objective is simple: predict which hand will finish closest to nine.

What Is the Objective of Baccarat?
The aim of baccarat is to predict which hand will have a final total closest to nine.
There are three main possible outcomes:
  • The Player hand wins.
  • The Banker hand wins.
  • Both hands finish with the same total, resulting in a Tie.
A hand does not need to score exactly nine to win. It only needs to have a value closer to nine than the opposing hand.
For example, if the Player finishes on seven and the Banker finishes on five, the Player wins. If the Player has four and the Banker has eight, the Banker wins.

Baccarat Card Values
Baccarat uses a straightforward scoring system:
  • Ace: Worth 1 point.
  • Cards 2 to 9: Worth their displayed value.
  • 10, Jack, Queen and King: Worth 0 points.
  • Suits: Do not affect the value of a hand.
When the cards total 10 or more, only the final digit counts.
For example:
  • A 4 and a 3 make a total of 7.
  • A 7 and an 8 add up to 15, so the hand is worth 5.
  • A 9 and a King make a total of 9, because the King is worth zero.
The highest possible baccarat hand value is nine.

Baccarat Betting Options
There are three main betting options in baccarat.

Player Bet - A Player bet wins if the Player hand finishes closer to nine than the Banker hand.
Banker Bet - A Banker bet wins if the Banker hand finishes closer to nine.

Depending on the baccarat version, a winning Banker bet may be subject to a commission. Some games instead use an alternative payout structure, so check the displayed rules before playing.

Tie Bet - A Tie bet wins if the Player and Banker hands finish with the same final value.

Payouts, commissions and available side bets can vary between baccarat games. Always check the information displayed by the selected game rather than assuming that every baccarat table uses identical rules.

How a Baccarat Round Works
A typical baccarat round follows these stages:
  1. Choose a stake: Select an amount within the game's minimum and maximum betting limits.
  2. Place a bet: Choose Player, Banker or Tie.
  3. Cards are dealt: The Player and Banker hands normally receive two cards each.
  4. Hand values are calculated: The baccarat scoring system is applied to both hands.
  5. Additional cards may be dealt: A third card can be added according to predetermined rules.
  6. The hands are compared: The hand closest to nine wins and qualifying bets are settled.
The participant does not normally decide whether another card should be drawn. The game follows the established baccarat rules automatically.

How Does the Third-Card Rule Work?
The third-card rules are one of the features that distinguish baccarat from many other casino card games.
An initial two-card total of eight or nine is generally known as a natural. When a natural occurs, additional cards are normally not required.
If there is no natural, a third card may be dealt according to fixed rules. The Player hand's action is determined by its initial total, while the Banker hand's action can depend on both its own total and the Player hand's third card.
The important point for beginners is that you do not choose whether either hand draws another card. The dealer or game software applies the predetermined rules automatically.

How Are Winning Bets Determined?
Once all required cards have been dealt, the final values of the two hands are compared.
  • A Player bet wins when the Player hand is closest to nine.
  • A Banker bet wins when the Banker hand is closest to nine.
  • A Tie bet wins when both hands have the same final value.
  • If a Tie occurs, the treatment of Player and Banker bets depends on the rules of the selected game.
The payout for a winning wager depends on the game's rules. Check the displayed payout and any commission information before placing a bet.

What to Check Before Playing Baccarat
Before starting a baccarat game, review:
  • Minimum and maximum stakes.
  • Player, Banker and Tie payouts.
  • Any commission applied to Banker wins.
  • Third-card rules.
  • Available side bets and their payouts.
  • The specific baccarat variant being offered.
  • Whether the game is RNG-based or uses a live dealer.
  • The game's RTP information.
These details can differ between games and operators, so checking the rules helps avoid surprises.

Baccarat Tips for Beginners
There is no strategy that can guarantee a winning baccarat result, but beginners can keep the game easier to understand by following a few basic principles:
  • Learn the card values before playing.
  • Remember that only the final digit of a total counts.
  • Check the payouts because they can vary between games.
  • Choose stakes that fit a predetermined budget.
  • Do not chase losses or increase stakes impulsively.
  • Do not assume previous results predict the next hand.
  • Treat side bets as optional and check their rules carefully.
Understanding baccarat's rules is more useful than trying to predict a sequence of cards or previous outcomes.

Play Baccarat Responsibly
Baccarat is a game of chance. Learning how the Player, Banker and Tie bets work can reduce confusion, but no betting pattern, system or previous result can guarantee a winning outcome.
Before playing, set a spending limit and a time limit that you are comfortable with. Take regular breaks, avoid chasing losses and only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
18+ only. Gamble responsibly. Gambling involves financial risk.
