A thrilling weekend of racing lies ahead, with emerging stars of the turf in action from Fairview on Friday to Longchamp in France on Sunday.
It starts with a double-header – a day/night meeting at
HWB Greyville follows Fairview racing and moves to Turffontein on Saturday, where the two Grade 2 Spring Challenges top the bill and smart three-year-olds will test themselves against seasoned older rivals.
There will be a Carryover Pick 6 to Turffontein for which a pool of R3-million is expected. You can access the TAB tote via the Betway tote portal, to have your 6% betting tax refunded at month-end.
At Newmarket, UK, Cinderalla’s Dream and Fatal Angel clash in a Group 2 at Newmarket on Saturday, before Minnie Hauk takes on the colts in a high-class renewal of the 2025 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp on Sunday, providing the perfect finale to three days of top-class racing.
Mike and Mathew de Kock have a number of runners with winning chances this weekend, and they will be saddling at two meetings. Below are Mat’s runner previews:
HWB Greyville, Friday 3 October:
Race 1, 1100m: “We have a first-up filly by Potala Palace called
Queen Braganza. She’s showing lots of speed at home. Not the best draw for her debut, but she has an eachway chance.”
Race 9, 1000m: “
Exocet was a bit disappointing over 1200m last time but he was stubborn, still learning about racing and benefited from the experience. He reverts to 1000m, he’s doing well in his work at home and has a good inside draw. We’re confident he can bounce back to his best. He should run a good race.”
Turffontein, Saturday 4 October:
Race 1, 1600m: “Drumnadrochit debuts for us. She is a Rafeef filly out of Kelpie, who won five times and was Grade 1 placed, and was an excellent miler. She is showing us some good work at home and should be in the first three past the post.”
Race 2, 1600m: “We’re putting a pair of blinkers on
My Lucky Charm as he has been disappointing, we expected him to win last time. The blinkers have made a big difference at home and we’re hoping now to see the results on the racetrack.”
Race 4, 1450m: “
Greaterix makes his comeback, he hasn’t raced since March when he ran fourth in the Horse Chestnut Stakes. We elected to run him in this race, because he drew badly in the Spring Challenge. He hasn’t had any grass work and will be short of peak fitness. But this is a nice place to start his campaign. He has enough natural talent and ability to run well. He will improve tons from this race, we’re excited to see him back.”
Race 5, 1200m: “
Miami Mountain is in the deep end in a tough field, but we decided to take the challenge from a good gate and he should be competitive from there. We think he is up to the challenge.”
Race 6, 1450m: “
Destiny Of Fire takes a step up in class for this Grade 2 feature. Her dam won this race as a three-year-old, and we’re hoping she can rise to the occasion, finish somewhere in the money and earn some black type.”
Race 9, 1600m: “Readallaboutit will need the run and also needs a lot further. We’re not expecting fireworks in this race, but we do expect him to improve a lot from this outing and he can be watched.”

Aiden O’Brien has supplemented his star filly
Minnie Hauk into the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, with Christophe Soumillon to hold her reins. O’Brien last won this race in 2016 with Found. Betway will be pricing up on the French showpiece, ecpect the best value!
