Mike De Kock's weekend picks

Mike de Kock saddled two good winners at the Vaal this week, but will have to wait until Monday for the next Gauteng meeting for the possibility of further success, as the weekend meetings have been scheduled for Kenilworth on Saturday and Greyville on Sunday.

Mike paid a rare visit to the Vaal on Thursday to see Mary Slack’s well-bred first-timer Bonete (Querari) in action and he said after her facile win: “I wanted to see her racing in the flesh. Bonete has been showing us proper work at home and while there wasn’t anything of note among her rivals, we think she’ll go on with it higher up the ranks. She is a Cape Fillies Guineas prospect; she’ll have to win again soon for that to happen but we have high hopes.”

He furnished runner comments for Monday’s Turffontein meeting, below:

Race 2, 1600m: “Sparkling Jubilee ran a cracker first time out, she was beaten a short head. Muzi Yeni has taken another ride, I guess if you want loyalty, you’d better but a dog. He clearly thinks he has a better chance on Cape Lights. But our filly will win races, she is doing well although this race comes fairly quick after her first one, and we’re set to go close.”

Race 3: “Tyrconnell has unfortunately injured himself and will be withdrawn.”

Race 4, 1600m: “Mike’s Chick enjoys this course and distance, she ran gamely after a rest last time and got second. She’s done well at home since then and should give another good account of herself, has a chance. Definitely Maybe has a ridiculous merit rating, not until she drops another 15 punds will she be competitive again, so she has a stiff task here.”

Race 5, 2000m: “Motown Magic needed last week’s run as we noted, he finished just over seven lengths off. That was a satisfactory comeback over a short trip but he needs another run to come to hand. He is better suited to 2000m, has a place chance but I do feel he will need this outing as well.”

Race 6, 2000m: “Vengeance Forever just recently joined the stable, it’s still a learning curve with him. We’re taking the gear off him, we’d like to see how he goes. I think he has a win in him, but will improve with this run behind him. Angelsea is very well weighted in this contest and she’s doing well at home.  She’s won over 1750m and if she sees out the extra here, can go close. Definite inclusion.

Race 8, 1450m: “Mr Bodacious hasn’t delivered, he’s a moderate sort and I cannot give any confidence about him.”

Race 9, 1450m: “We’ve aways rated Arividicio, he’s a decent gelding. He ran to a very high rating last time in a strong Graduation Plate won by Prophet. The handicapper couldn’t penalise him because of the conditions of the race and he’ll jump from barrier one. He has a good winning chance, our best runner for the day.”

*Trainer Candice Bass-Robinson and jockey Aldo Domeyer have been fulsome in their praise for Drakenstein Stud’s unbeaten colt Charles Dickens, a runner with an excellent turn of foot. He goes for back-to-back G3 wins in the Cape Classic over 1400m at Kenilworth on Saturday and is one racing fans will be eager to see in action. He’ll be a popular choice in most multiple bets – look for the best combinations on the Betway website!
