Matchday 12

Chelsea v Manchester City

Stamford Bridge
London, England
Sunday, 12 November 2023
Kick-off is at 18h30

Manchester City will be wary of the threat posed by Chelsea when they lock horns in a Premier League encounter at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, November 12 in the late kick-off.

The Citizens went one point clear at league summit after dispatching Bournemouth 6-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, November 4 and they saw both Arsenal and Tottenham go on to suffer their first defeats of the season on matchday 11.

The Gunners (4th) were beaten 1-0 by Newcastle courtesy of a controversial winner from Anthony Gordon at St James' Park, while Spurs (2nd) sunk to a 4-1 loss against the Blues after having two players sent off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Liverpool climbed above Mikel Arteta's side on goals scored, although they missed out on the chance to leapfrog the Lilywhites as well after being held to a 1-1 draw by Luton at Kenilworth Road.

The West Londoners used their numerical advantage to full effect as they battled back from an early goal down to finish off Tottenham in stoppage time, with Nicolas Jackson bagging a hat-trick.

Mauricio Pochettino's side moved into the top 10 with only their fourth win of the campaign and they trail neighbours Brentford (9th) by one point, while Manchester United (8th) and Brighton (7th) are just a further two points better off.

Jackson was at the right place at the right time to score his first two goals and the Senegal striker showed great composure for the third when he latched onto a ball over the top to put Guglielmo Vicario on the floor before tapping into an open net. He has now scored five goals in 10 league appearances and is the club's top scorer this term.

Jeremy Doku played a starring role in the demolition of the Cherries as City seemed like scoring every time he touched the ball. The Belgian winger broke the deadlock with a neat finish on the half-hour mark and saw his shot go in off Manuel Akanji in the 37th minute, while also registering another three assists.

Pochettino was pleased to see Jackson get his reward after enduring a difficult start to his career at Stamford Bridge and having to shoulder the responsibility following an injury to Christopher Nkunku.

"I am happy for him because we know that when strikers don't score, they suffer," the Argentine said. "So that is for people to think. He is really young, arrived to the club this summer, and it's not easy to play for Chelsea. It's the history, about winning, lifting trophies.

"That's why as a coaching staff we need to provide the tools and be calm with the way we assess things. The confidence is there and I am so happy for him because he deserves the boost."

Guardiola admits he gets excited when Doku is on the ball and is impressed with how the new signing has adapted to his new surroundings so quickly.

"In his first game against Fulham he was so shy, but at West Ham he started to show his incredible skills," the Spaniard said. "He played really good there and all the games here at home he played fantastic.

"But he's not just one against one and one against two. He surprised all of us - he's a great footballer... When he takes the ball and goes everybody is excited, and me too. Something is going to happen, and it happens."
