2024-25 Spanish La Liga
Matchday 38
Athletic Bilbao v Barcelona

Estadio San Mames
Bilbao, Spain
Sunday, 25 May 2025
Kick-off is at 21h00

Athletic Bilbao will be hoping that Barcelona's title hangover continues when they square off at San Mames in the final match of the La Liga season on Sunday, May 25.

The Blaugrana were confirmed champions after beating Espanyol 2-0 in the Catalan derby on May 15 which ensured them an unassailable seven-point lead over Real Madrid with two matches left to play.

Hansi Flick's side suffered a 3-2 defeat to Villarreal three days later, making it their second loss at home to the Yellow Submarine in two years and halting a 17-game unbeaten run.

The Lions have secured UEFA Champions League football after winning four of their last five matches, with a 1-0 victory against Valencia on May 18 taking them 11 points clear of Real Betis (6th) in fourth place.

Athletic are three points behind Atletico Madrid (3rd) and three ahead of Villarreal (5th), but the table will remain unchanged regardless of the results on matchday 38 due to the head-to-head points between the teams.

Betis were also in the frame with three fixtures remaining, but successive draws against Osasuna (1-1) and Rayo Vallecano (2-2) effectively ended their challenge and they will have to settle for Europa League football.

The Basque outfit have already surpassed last season's tally of 68 and head coach Ernesto Valverde admits they've exceeded expectations in 2024=25.

"We have 70 points. If we thought about it at the start of the season we wouldn't believe it, we're fourth and we're in the Champions League. It has been an extraordinary season," Valverde declared.

"We host Barca and we have the farewell of Oscar [de Marcos], as well as the difficulty and the rivalry that we have with the them. We don't need any more incentive, we're ready and looking forward to it."

Barca's final game at the Estadi Olímpic Lluis Companys ended in disappointment, but Flick will look back at his time there with fond memories as his team are set to return the Camp Nou in 2025-26.

"We haven't talked about the return to the Camp Nou. We have to wait. Obviously I have a great experience with this stadium. It has been wonderful," the German said.

"I'm looking forward to going to the new stadium and it will be fantastic. The holidays are long and I hope to start the season by returning as we need."
