2026/27 La Liga
Matchday 1
Alaves v Getafe
Saturday 15 August, 19:30
Mendizorrotza Stadium
Deportivo Alaves and Getafe will have the honour of opening the 2026/27 La Liga season when they face off at the Mendizorrotza Stadium on Saturday 15 August, kick-off at 19:30.
Form and team news
Alaves finished 14th in La Liga last season, just one point above the relegation zone. Coach Quique Sanchez Flores took over in March 2026 and helped the team avoid the drop. He will be determined to see them climb the table in this campaign.
The Babazorros completed their pre-season campaign with a 1-1 draw (followed by 7-6 penalty shootout win) in a friendly with promoted Racing Santander on Friday 7 August.
Getafe, meanwhile, finished seventh in La Liga last season and qualified for the UEFA Conference League playoff round. Coach Jose Bordalas has been in charge since 2023 (recently signing an extension to 2028) and is looking to transform the Azulones into a team capable of challenging for the Champions League places.
The Azulones have actively reshaped their squad through key permanent signings like Martín Satriano (from Lyon) and Zaid Romero (from Club Brugge), alongside notable departures including Luis Milla to Como and Mauro Arambarri to River Plate.
What the teams are saying
Getafe’s Jose Bordalas on the departure of key players such as Luis Milla and Coba da Costa: “That's football, Getafe has needs, it finds itself obliged to depend on important players, and others arrive who have less experience at the club, but we will try to make them adapt as well as possible, and that we can compensate for that void with the work of everyone, both the sporting management, the club, in this case me as coach, to try to make a team that is as competitive as possible.”
Head-to-head
In head-to-head stats, Alaves and Getafe have met in 24 matches dating back as far as 1995. Both the Babazorros and the Azulones have claimed seven wins, while 10 games have been drawn.
Getafe took four points off Alaves last season, drawing 1-1 at home in September 2025 and winning 2-0 away in the Basque region in February 2026.
