On the back of a disappointing exit at the recent T20 World Cup, South Africa will now turn their attention to yet another tricky series against New Zealand on away grounds.

South Africa will head into their next challenge on the back of a semi-final exit at the T20 World Cup, after the Black Caps recorded a nine-wicket win at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on 4 March.

With South Africa at the crease initially, the Proteas put up 169 across 20 overs, a score led by Marco Jansen, who recorded 55 runs from 30 balls. Also playing his part, Dewald Brevis put up 34 from 27 balls, while Tristan Tubbs was South Africa’s third-highest scorer with 29 from 24 balls.

While South Africa came off a seven-match winning streak leading up to the semi-finals, the Black Caps outclassed their counterparts by putting up 173 from 12.5 overs at the crease.

Finn Allen was no match for the South African bowlers, racing to 100 runs off 33 balls, while Tim Seifert added 58 from 33 balls. In rounding off the score, Rachin Ravindra scored 13 from 11 balls as New Zealand ran to victory in India.

Heading into the next series, South Africa will feature a host of new faces in New Zealand, as seen in the inclusions of Connor Esterhuizen, Dian Forrester, Jordan Hermann, and Eathan Bosch.

New Zealand will welcome call-ups from batters Katene Clarke and Nick Kelly to face South Africa, while spinner Jayden Lennox likewise made the cut.

Also, Kyle Jamieson, Jimmy Neesham, Cole McConchie, Ben Sears, and Ish Sodhi have also been named for the series, while Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, and Rachin Ravindra have been rested after the World Cup.

Reflecting on the Proteas defeat to New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semi-finals, South Africa coach Shurki Conrad conceded that his side was fairly beaten amid constant criticism at falling short on big occasions.

“Now all the clichés [about us being chokers] will come out again,” Conrad said.

“But it’s got nothing to do with that. I don’t know if tonight was a choke. I thought it was a walloping. We got our arses kicked. In order for you to choke, you must have had a sniff in the game.

“We didn’t have a sniff. We got a real hiding".
