Friday, 24 March 2023
Kick-off is at 18h00

South Africa will take on Liberia in a 2023 AFCON qualification Group K match at the Orlando Stadium on March 24.

Current Form

Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-1 defeat to Morocco away in June 2022 as they extended their winless run to three matches in the AFCON Qualifiers.

However, South Africa are undefeated in their last 15 matches at home in the AFCON Qualifiers having registered six wins and nine draws as the hosts.

Liberia, on the other hand, succumbed to a 2-0 defeat to Morocco at home in June 2022 and they are winless in their last two games in the AFCON Qualifiers.

The Lone Stars are also winless in their last five matches on the road in the AFCON Qualifiers having registered five consecutive defeats as the visitors.

What Is At Stake

South Africa are placed second on the Group K standings - six points behind leaders Morocco who have played one extra game in the three-team group.

Bafana will reduce the gap to three points if they secure a win over the Lone Stars with four matches left.

Liberia, meanwhile, will climb up to the second spot on the standings if they cause an upset by defeating the 1996 African champions.

Team News

Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has recalled Al Ahly star Percy Tau to the national team and also included in-form Mamelodi Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula in the squad.

Broos' Liberian counterpart Ansumana Keita has included Europe-based stars Oscar Dorley of Slavia Prague and Valleta centre forward Williams Jebor in his latest squad.

Key Players

South Africa will look to Tau who has been in good form for Al Ahly in this season's CAF Champions League having scored in each of his last two matches in the competition.

While Jebor is the player to watch out for in the Liberia team having scored in each of his last five matches in the AFCON qualifiers including a winning goal against Zimbabwe.

Quotes

“There was a lot of criticism from my colleagues and that really hurt me," Broos said ahead of their matches against Liberia.

"I said some things in June last year, which made people angry but I had to say them, but it’s okay. There’s no battle anymore and we try to qualify SA for Afcon next year.

“Yes, I am confident we will qualify – I can feel it and when I see the games and the opponents we chose in September and November, they are better quality than Liberia."

Head-to-Head

South Africa and Liberia have met twice and both matches were part of the 2002 AFCON Qualifiers.

Bafana won 2-1 at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg before the two teams drew 1-1 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Monrovia.
