Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: HWB Scottsville

There’s are a number of good betting prospects this weekend, on the local front and internationally. HWB Scottsville features the Grade 3 TAB Oaks and Grade 3 TAB Derby on Saturday and they include two runners worth having a strike on.

Sean Tarry’s Carry On Alice (9-2 with Betway) is arguably the classiest filly in the Oaks. On the strength of her close second place to Fiery Pegasus in the Grade 2 SA Oaks at Turffontein, she has no stamina doubts whatsoever and should be able to defeat her older rivals. Future Swing (9-10 with Betway), rated 117, is weighted to win the Derby, especially considering that he is 5,5kg better off with Field Marshall in the recent Lonsdale Stirrup Cup.

Saturday sees the running of the Listed Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes over 2800m at York, and Betway is offering good price in a five-horse field the Willie Mullins-trained seven-year-old, Absurde. He is priced up at 2.36 to 1 (Friday), and this looks like value. Absurde is all class. He has twice contested the Melbourne Cup over 3200m and last year finished fifth, within two lengths off the winner.  Absurde was prepped in two hurdle races and an excellent recent Graded run on the flat, coming into this contest. He will be the fittest horse in the race and Mullins said his charge was very well and that this race was a good choice for this stage of his career.

At Turffontein on Sunday, three runners shape up as leading contenders in their respective races, offering punters a variety of options, including all to come bets and doubles. Mike and Mathew de Kock’s Jan Van Goyen looks a blinder in Race 2, Radio Star (well backed on good debut) should win Race 3 and Japanese Garden (three competitive runs and looks ready) will be hard to beat in Race 4.

Here are comments from Mat de Kock:

HWB SCOTTSVILLE, SATURDAY:

Race 2, 1200m: “Gotta Go Eddie has been gelded and he has been showing better work at home, since.  He should have a nice eachway chance in his first run back.”

Race 3, 1200m:Next Of Kin is a newcomer by Canford Cliffs. He is green and wants further than 1200m, we’re starting him off here and we’ll be watching with interest.”

TURFFONTEIN SUNDAY (Standside):
Race 1, 1160m: “Two newcomers here. Detailed Forecast is a smart filly, working very well. This looks like a very strong race. Usually we’d be a bit more confident to recommend a filly like this to win, but being such a strong race, we’d be happy with a top three or four finish. Then there is Open Sesame, also a nice sort. She is going about things the right way. But she is by Futura, bred for further, and this will be a come-on run for her. One to watch when she stretches out over a bit further.”

Race 2, 1160m: “Jan Van Goyen came out of his debut win in good order. We are very happy with him heading into this race. It looks like a harder race to win, but he should be up to it.”

Race 4, 1400m:Schipole got taken out badly on her debut, she was separated from the field. She is certainly better than that performance. But she is still quite green, and needs more racing experience. Hard to give confidence, we’re just looking for a better run from her.”

Race 8, 1600m:Artists Model has made significant improvement, fitness wise, after his fair last run. He looks ready for a competitive run, we give him a good eachway chance.”
