Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: HWB Greyville

It’s a full weekend of exciting local and global racing, and Mike and Mathew de Kock have 16 runners competing at HWB Greyville on Saturday and Turffontein on Sunday. Here are Mat’s previews:

HWB GREYVILLE, SATURDAY:

Race 2, 1600m: “Tyrconnell has been frustrating to follow, we expected him to win his last run. He manages to find excuses every time. From draw one, and stepping up to 1600m, we’re hoping everything can go his way. He can win a race like this. Ingqwele didn’t run the race we expected last week, but he was squeezed for running room on the outside fence, so we’re putting a line through that run. He didn’t have a hard race, we’re running him again and we’re hoping he can bounce back with something much better.

Race 3, 1900m: “An open race. Nocturnal Flight hasn’t been far off in his few runs for us. He’s been travelling a bit hard, so we’re taking the blinkers off him, which is somewhat of a gamble but perhaps it can allow him to switch off and relax, have more to come over the last 400m. He is worthy of inclusion.”

Race 6, 1400m:Yippee Kiyay has a good draw and he’s in good form at home. He comes out of a Maiden into a Listed race, but we think he can handle it and is a big runner.   Whispering Death has had a bit of a freshening up after his Joburg campaign. He is not fully wound up and doesn’t have the best of draws. This is a stepping stone for July day, the run will bring him on.”

Race 7, 1600m: “Dave The King has enjoyed a smooth preparation into the Gold Challenge, he is doing well. We’ve seen a nice amount of improvement in his fitness and well-being. We are confident of a big run. It’s a competitive and exciting contest, we’re hoping he’ll be the best horse come Saturday.”

Race 8, 1400m:Oxalis Gold is back over the course and distance of her recent feature win. She is in good form at home, can place herself well within a race and looks to be one of the main contenders. Include in all bets.”

TURFFONTEIN SUNDAY:

Race 1, 1000m: “A nice newcomer here in Gimmeforsure, by Gimmethegreenlight. She has shown us lots of speed at home, some good quality work. If she can overcome greenness and inexperience, she’ll run well. She has a winning chance.”

Race 3,1 400m: “Three runners: White Pearl is well weighted and in good form. She has a strong winning chance from a good draw.
Gimmeanotherchance ran a very nice race last Tuesday, more like him. We’re hoping the quick back-up can keep him going, we know he is capable of winning a race like this, so he certainly has eachway claims. Wecangoallnight is a tricky customer to work with in the mornings. We feel like we’re slowly getting on top of his bad habits. He’ll enjoy stepping up to 1400m. He’s only had one run for us, we’re still getting to know him. He bears watching, probably one run short of his best.”

Race 4, 1160m:Emerald Forge is consistent, knocking at the door and getting good weight allowances from her rivals. We’re expecting her to be right there.”

Race 6, 1400m:Limerick Lace was an impressive debut winner over what we considered to be the bottom of her range, so the step up to 1400m should be right up her alley. She has a tricky barrier, will have to do more work than the rest, in a competitive field. We give her a nice eachway chance.”

Race 7, 1400m: “Two decent runners. Read All About It has been gelded and he has improved at home. We still think 1400m is on the sharp side, so look for him to be finishing off strongly, one to follow over a bit further. Take No Prisoners seems to have made natural improvement after his debut win, something we like to see. He has a bit of a sticky draw, we’re hoping for a smooth run in transit. It’s a tougher line-up, but we think he can be competitive.”

Race 8, 1800m: “Immediate Edge has had a lovely prep for this Grade 3, he has a nice draw and bottom weight. Kabelo knows him well now. He’s running with older horses in a strong race, but we’re confident in his well-being and ability. He now has to step up to the plate and put his hand up for some of the big races coming up.”
