As two highly competitive sides on the African continent, reigning Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions South Africa will begin their title defence with a mouth watering Group C opener against Ghana next Monday.

Banyana were immaculate in their triumph of the 2022 WAFCON tournament, winning five matches in a row before bagging a 2-1 win against hosts Morocco in the final.
As one time WAFCON winners, South Africa goalkeeper Kaylin Swart expressed that the champions are aiming to do it all over again in Morocco.

“It’s such great memories in Morocco, we were in Rabat in 2022 and now we’re in Casablanca but yeah, the feeling is the same we’re very excited to be here because it’s familiar territory for us and hopefully all that excitement can come back from 2022 and, hopefully, we can do it again,” Swart said.

“Now we have got to obviously write a new book and there’s a lot more to be to be done but if we can repeat history that would be great. It’s not going to be easy but yes 2024 (2025) might just be a really good chapter for us.”

The Black Queens, who are led by Kim Lars Björkegren, are yet to lift WAFCON silverware despite being among the most competitive nations on the continent.

Ghana were runners-up on three occasions in the tournament, namely in 1998, 2002 and 2006.
Reflecting on Ghana’s chances in Morocco, Björkegren is of the thought that his side can beat any team on their day.
“Ghana hasn't won the title, and the last final was in 2006,” Björkegren said.
“So we're not among the favourites. But I believe we can be a strong underdog. If we stick to the game plan and have a good day, we can beat any team.”
