2022 Castle Lager Incoming Series

3rd test match

South Africa vs Wales

Eben Etzebeth is set to win his 100th cap for South Africa when they face Wales in the third and final test of the 2022 Castle Lager Incoming Series at the DHL Stadium on Saturday, July 16.

The Sharks lock is one of only five players to retain their places in the team that lost the second test 13-12 in Bloemfontein last weekend as the Welsh levelled the series at 1-1.

Springboks head coach Jacques Nienaber made 14 changes for that match and he will reshuffle the pack once more for the decider in Cape Town, with Siya Kolisi returning to skipper the side.

The second test was another nailbiter as Wales clinched victory at the death when Gareth Anscombe converted Josh Adams' try to stun the hosts, who had led 12-6 with four minutes left to play.

Nienaber anticipates another stern examination from the visitors following their historic win in the Free State last time out, with the Boks aiming to avoid a first-ever series defeat to them on home soil.

"We pointed out from the outset of the series that Wales will be desperate and they showed that in the last two weeks," he said.

"We are expecting another hard grind against them and the fact that they will be playing for their first series victory ever in South Africa will make them even more desperate to push us to the limit this weekend, so we know it will be an epic battle.

"That said, we are also playing in what is essentially a final for us and we know that we need to pitch up on the day and deliver a quality 80-minute performance to emerge victorious."

Meanwhile, Wales head coach Wayne Pivac must do without Alex Cuthbert for the encounter in Green Point after the winger sustained a shoulder injury last weekend.

Cuthbert was forced off in the first half and had to be replaced by Adams, who scored the try to set up the victory for Pivac's men.

Adams has stressed the importance of taking their chances against the Springboks, something they didn't do so well in the first two tests.

"You have to be clinical against South Africa, especially when you get into their 22, you have to come away with as many points as you can," he said.

"We were clinical. One shot, one kill, if you like. Our resolve to stay in the fight was good, our forwards kept chipping away, they didn't rush anything, we didn't lose patience and it was a well-worked try.

"Looking back over the two Tests there have been opportunities we haven't taken and that's been frustrating for us, especially as backs. This week will be about being as clinical as we can be and taking the chances."
