Cape Verde will be hoping to continue the fairytale when they face South Africa in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals at the Charles Konan Banny Stadium on Saturday, February 3.

The Blue Sharks caused the first major upset of the tournament after beating Ghana 2-1 and they went on to claim top spot in Group B following a 3-0 victory over Mozambique and a 2-2 draw with Egypt.

Bubista's side then made history as they edged Mauritania 1-0 in the round of 16 on January 29 to register their first-ever win in the knockout stages of AFCON.

Bafana Bafana advanced from Group E as runners-up to Mali, who beat them 2-0 first up in Ivory Coast, but they bounced back by thrashing neighbours Namibia 4-0 before playing out to a 0-0 draw with Tunisia.

Hugo Broos' side then sprung a massive surprise when they eliminated title favourites Morocco in the last 16 as second-half goals from Evidence Makgopa (57') and Teboho Mokoena (90+5') sealed a 2-0 win.

This will be the second meeting between the two teams at the continental showpiece after they shared the spoils in a 0-0 draw during the group stages of the 2013 edition. Their other four encounters all came in World Cup qualifying, with Cape Verde and South Africa winning two games each.

Bubista wants to keep challenging the best teams in Africa on a more regular basis as he looks to build on a fine 2023 which saw the Blue Sharks lose just three of their nine matches.

"We are carving our path; we know there are many bigger teams than us, but we are trying to focus on our game to have the opportunity to face these African powerhouses," he said.

"Our goal is to work towards having a stronger squad."

Broos has seen Bafana Bafana continue to go from strength to strength at the African spectacle and believes his players are gelling at the right time.

"I said at the beginning of the tournament that it is important to grow and I think Bafana are growing. We played against Mali, we lost, we beat Namibia. The difficult game against Tunisia and today against Morocco," the Belgian said.

"We are getting better and better and this is important. We are playing well as a team and have players who can make a difference like today's fantastic free-kick from Mokoena and nice goal from Makgopa."
