Mike De Kock's Horse Racing Picks: Vaal and Kenilworth

Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock is abroad and, with no runners from his stable at the weekend, top tipster Daryn Burroughs of Betway’s Weighted To Win Show on Racing 240 has given readers of this insider’s blog some good pointers to the weekend meetings at the Vaal (Saturday) and Kenilworth (Sunday).

During this week Daryn tipped a 63-1 double with Innamorare and his own horse, Kelp Forest, winning at Kenilworth. He believes there is more of the same kind of value to be had at both the weekend meetings.

Starting in Race 3 over 1200m at The Vaal on Saturday, Daryn said Duke Of Rock looks a fair bet at Betway’s current price of 11-2. “He was absolutely reefing in front at the 300m mark last time, but he’d gone too fast in the early part and got nabbed late in the race. They’ll tuck him in this time, I’m sure, and with more restraint he’ll have more reserves and can fight out the finish.”

The Vaal Grand Heritage over the unusual 1475m has produced a few upsets in previous years, but Daryn feels the ante-post favourite Silent War (4-1) will make it five wins in a row. He’s been backed in from 11-2 already, there is stable confidence and Daryn said: “Silent War has gone from strength to strength with Tony Peter and I think there is even more improvement to come. I like him a lot, for five on the trot!”

He's also strong on Sean Tarry’s The Africa House (Race 8) and said: “He ran just behind star colt Sandringham Summit in the Dingaans last time, that was a reflection of his ability. With just 54kg to shoulder he should be too good for his older rivals. He is worth a Win bet around 3-1.”

Daryn’s strongest fancy at Kenilworth is Justin Snaith’s Summer Lily in Race 9 over 1400m. He explained his enthusiasm for this 5-2 chance, saying: “She was stuck at the back at Durbanville last time and she took off when she saw daylight, finishing third. She will enjoy the long straight at Kenilworth, has a better draw and her jockey JP van der Merwe is in form. I rate her my best bet of the weekend.”

He mentioned three others worth following, starting with Stars In Heaven in Race 2 over 1200m. “This horse is better than his form shows. Trainer Gareth van Zyl fancied him over 1400m last time and he found that just a trifle too far. Back over 1200m he will be a serious runner with Fourie up. He has already been shortened from 6-1 into 4-1 but there may be better odds available on the day as there are other runners with chances.”

Pomodoro’s Jet (Race 4, 1600m) is a horse on the up and Daryn said: “Pomodoro’s Jet has had two excellent comeback runs after a long rest, he won last time and I think there is more in the tank. He is good enough to go in again.”

Then there is well-bred Priceless (Race 6, 1800m), another trained by Brett Crawford. “This one didn’t shape over sprints, but the moment they tried her over 2000m she blew her rivals away at Durbanville. She’s another who will like the longer run-in and holds a big chance again over 1800m,” Daryn opined.

Tote customers have opportunities to land big wins and Jackpot ONE is a must play at Saturday’s meeting at the Vaal and Sunday’s Hollywoodbets Kenilworth fixture. Jackpot ONE pools on both days start with R250,000 carryovers and both should total over R1 million so there’s good money to be won. Access the tote via the portal on the Betway website.
