2022/23 English Premier League

Matchday 5

Liverpool v Newcastle United

Kick-off is at 21h00

Liverpool will be looking to build on their first win of the Premier League season when they welcome Newcastle to Anfield on Wednesday, August 31.

Jurgen Klopp's side made a disappointing start to the new campaign after drawing with Fulham and Crystal Palace before being beaten 2-1 by fierce rivals Manchester United last time out.

However, the Reds gave a perfect response on Saturday as they thumped newly-promoted Bournemouth 9-0 on Merseyside to record their biggest-ever home win in the Premier League era.

Klopp acknowledged their performances hadn't been anywhere near good enough in the first three games and was impressed with their attitude against the Cherries to keep pushing for more goals.

"We were not happy with the way we played. We had good moments in nearly all the games where we showed things which we are strong at, and other things where we have to improve," the German said.

"That's what we had to do today, but you cannot make a list and take them all off the list step by step. You just have to give the game a proper direction and that's why I loved the start today so much.

"You get this early goal and you get the second. And we kept going, scored different goals but always with the same purpose: keep going, put them under pressure, don't stop."

The Magpies have yet to taste defeat after four outings, although they are seeking to snap a three-match winless run in midweek.

Eddie Howe's troops kicked off proceedings with a 2-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, but Sunday's 1-1 draw with Wolves at Molineux was their third one-point haul in a row.

The Toon needed a last-minute minute goal from Allan Saint-Maximin to rescue a share of the spoils in the Black Country after falling behind to Ruben Neves' 38th-minute opener.

Howe praised his players for their fighting spirit to keep pushing until the final whistle, but felt they should have come away from Wolverhampton with all three points.

"Mixed emotions for me," he told Sky Sports. "First half, I thought we weren't particularly great. That was frustrating because I thought we could have imposed ourselves more.

"But then very pleased with the second half. We penned them in and we had a number of chances and arguably should have won the game.

"I thought we controlled the game with the ball in the second half. We made better decisions around the box. We didn't have our normal rhythm in the first half.

"But delighted with our never-say-die attitude. We were never beaten today, right until the end, and full credit to the players for that."
