Matchday 31

Real Madrid v Girona

Bernabeu

Madrid, Spain

Kick-off is at 21h00

Real Madrid will be looking to keep their fading title hopes alive when they welcome Girona to the Bernabeu on Friday, April 10.

Los Blancos' bid to reclaim the La Liga crown from Barcelona suffered another damaging blow after they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Real Mallorca on April 4.

Alvaro Arbeloa's side, who had won three on the spin since losing 1-0 to Getafe in a local derby on March 2, are now seven points behind arch-rivals Barca in second place with eight games remaining in the season.

Real have a good recent record against the Blanquivermells though, winning four of their last five encounters, but were held to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at Montilivi on November 30.

Girona will have a spring in their step after recording a surprise 1-0 victory over Villarreal on April 6 to give themselves some breathing space to the relegation zone.

Michel's side had won just one of their previous five matches and the result against the Yellow Submarine lifted them up to 12th position, nine points clear of Elche (18th).

The Catalan outfit, who finished 16th last term, find themselves just one point outside the top 10, with Athletic Bilbao (11th), Espanyol (10th) and Osasuna (9th) all tied on 38 points.

Arbeloa admits Real cannot afford to drop any more points if they hope to hope to wrestle the trophy back from the Blaugrana, but is aware that performances have to improve.

"It is clear that the league is more difficult now than it was before the match started," he said. "We have eight matchdays left, and basically, what I have told the players is that regardless of the league's status, our next objective is to win the remaining eight matches.

"To do this, we need to play better than we did today and perform at a much higher level. We are aware that everything is more difficult because there are fewer matchdays left, and the gap tonight could be bigger, but our goal must remain the same."
