Today's Racecard: Mike De Kock's picks for GTH Horse Racing Team Series

The Gauteng Gijimaz will cross swords with the Cape Stingers in Friday evening’s second leg of the GTH Horse Racing Team Series that commenced at Greyville last week and saw the Kwazulu Royals bag 452 points to lead the contest by 4 points.

The leaders have the second leg off tonight and this gives Gajimaz Captain Gavin Lerena an opportunity to make ground on the individual log-leader Muzi Yeni, who booted home a treble at the first meeting and holds a slender lead.

Lerena’s best mounts, on paper, are Goodtime Guy (Race 5) and Political Party (Race 7), but tonight’s card has drawn fields that are a touch more competitive and in which the apprentice jockeys have several chances of showing their senior rivals the way home. Champion apprentice Rachel Venniker has a big chance of upsetting Goodtime Guy on Wendy Whitehead’s runner Chatterton’s Keeper, the powerful front-runner, while Wiidski comes into the picture as a potential challenger in Race 7.

Apprentice Donald Geerthsen, the 4kg claimer, has a big chance of putting the Stingers on the board in Race 1 over 1200m. He rides the odds-on ante-post favourite Where’s That Party, a filly punters seem to regard as a ‘pointer’ if the early betting market is anything to go by.

Apprentice Gabriell Pieterse is down to a claim of 1,5kg, but that still gives him an advantage on good form runner Passage Of Power in Race 4 over 1200m, where Betway’s opening 18-10 looks a tempting betting prospect.

Stingers team member Khanya Sakayi’s mount Flower Season (6-1 with Betway), represents some value in Race 4 over 1400m, but the Gijimaz can pull one back with Calvin Habib riding Artic Drift in Race 6 over 1400m, while Jason Gates can seal it in Race 8 on the consistent Lucky Miss.

There is a Double worth playing at the Kenilworth race meeting on Saturday. Trainer Dean Kannemeyer will fancy his chances to win Race 3 over 1400m with I Did It My Way, who races for Neil Andrews’ Benmag Syndicate. He’s on offer at a generous even money which, coupled with the 15-10 about Love Rules (Rave 4), works out to a shade over 4-1. Love Rules also looks hard to oppose, having run on strongly in her 1200m Maiden and, as one of the last racing daughters of Dynasty, is sure to enjoy the extra 200m of tomorrow’s contest.

It’s back to Scottsville for a nine-race programme on Sunday and where another Snaith-trained filly, Jazbella, is the first one that catches the eye. She moved up well after a slow start on her 1200m debut against winners and is another likely to be well suited by 1400m. It is interesting to note that recent fluent winner Acacia’s Blossom came from behind Jazzbella in this line of collateral form, a solid pointer to what we can expect on Sunday.

KZN Champion trainer Gareth van Zyl said earlier this week that he believes the International Racing Club’s filly Alittlebitnaughty has a fair chance I Race 6 over 1600m, but pointed to the Kannemeyer runner Dawnofanewday as the possible winner. He commented: “Out filly looks physically better after her fourth place last week and she is ready for a good run, but I think Dawnofanewday will be a tough nut to crack.”
