India v South Africa

Eden Gardens
Kolkata, India
Sunday, 5 November 2023

First plays second when India and South Africa meet in the 2023 Cricket World Cup at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, November 5.

The Proteas have emerged as contenders to lift the coveted trophy after some strong performances against Australia and defending champions England.

Rob Walter's side comprehensively beat New Zealand by 190 runs in Pune on Wednesday, November 1 to make it six wins from seven matches in the tournament.

Centuries from Quinton de Kock (114) and Rassie van der Dussen (133) helped South Africa reach 357/4 - their fifth total over 300 in India.

The Black Caps could only muster 167 in reply as Marco Jansen (3/31) and Keshav Maharaj (4/46) did the brunt of the damage with the ball, taking seven wickets between them.

Van der Dussen, who was named Player of the Match after scoring his second hundred of the World Cup, paid tribute to the middle order for pushing on to take the score above 350 against a very disciplined Kiwi bowling attack.

"We had to work hard, Quinny [De Kock] played brilliantly and guided me. We batted together nicely, and we went big as the ball went softer," the 34-year-old said in the post-match presentation.

"Quinny was reminding me to keep my shape, respect good balls. It's tough to hit through the line right away. [David] Miller and Co made it look easy.

"We were thinking about 300-320 as a score but sky is the limit with our middle order. Very pleased to win by a big margin, [it] was an out-and-out team performance which was great."

Hosts India have the only perfect record in the tournament after they humiliated near neighbours Sri Lanka in Mumbai on Thursday, November 2 to reclaim top spot in the points table.

The Men in Blue posted a formidable 357/8, with Shubman Gill (92), Virat Kohli (88) and Shreyas Iyer (82) all scoring half-centuries, while Dilshan Madushanka picked up an impressive five-wicket haul to finish with figures of 5/80.

The Lions got off to the worst possible start in their innings as openers Pathum Nissanka and Dimuth Karunaratne were both dismissed for ducks and they never recovered, eventually slumping to 55 all out.

Mohammed Shami was the pick of the Indian bowlers, also taking five wickets for his 18 runs in his five overs, earning him the Player-of-the-Match award.

"All the hard work we are putting in, the rhythm we have found, it's because of that that you are getting to see this storm (on the cricket field), the incredible things our bowling unit is doing," Shami said.

"The rhythm we are bowling with, I can't believe anyone will not enjoy it. So, yes, we are enjoying ourselves a lot and working together as a unit, and you are able to see the results of that."
