Newcastle look to keep up strong form

2019/20 Premier League

Round 13

23-25 November 2019

Newcastle United will look to keep up their strong form in the Premier League when they face hosts Aston Villa at Villa Park on Monday 25 November 2019, kick-off at 22:00.

Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce

Newcastle have taken 10 points from the last 15 available and claimed a second straight win when they defeated Bournemouth 2-1 at home before the international break, with the result taking them to 13th place and opening a seven-point buffer to the relegation zone.

"It's silly to be looking at the table when there's so many games left to play," said Isaac Hayden. “The most important thing for us is carry on getting three points. If that brings us closer to those areas, that's fantastic.

“At the end of the day, our main focus is trying to get points on the board and as many as possible. You look at the halfway point and you're aiming for the 20-22 points mark. We're well on our way to doing that, which is good. We can take stock of what we've done over the last few weeks.”

Villa have suffered three straight losses in the Premier League, with their latest setback a 2-1 loss away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in a regional derby. The Villains have dropped to 17th on the log, just one place and three points above the danger zone.

The loss at Wolves made manager Dean Smith question his players’ desire: “You have to go and compete, it doesn’t matter what game you’re playing,” he explained. ““We didn’t cope with the pressure we were put under. They were right up for it from the start and we didn’t have enough intensity in our play. That’s something we’ll talk about. It won’t take an awful lot to be better.”

Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu

In head-to-head stats, Villa and Newcastle have met in 146 previous matches. The Magpies have claimed 65 wins compared to 47 for the Villains, while 34 games have been drawn.

The teams last met in the Premier League in the 2015/16 season, with both games ending in draws: 1-1 at St James Park and 0-0 at Villa Park. Their most recent clash was in the Championship in February 2017, with Newcastle claiming a 2-0 home win.
