The KwaZulu-Natal Champions Season is well underway and Saturday’s programme at Greyville includes three graded feature races and a novelty race over 400m for punters to enjoy.

First up, the G2 Independent On Saturday Drill Hall Stakes over 1400m, in which Durban July candidates Linebacker and Jet Dark make their first appearances since February and will be closely watched for their condition and anticipated progress into Durban’s flagship race.

The accomplished pair’s possible ring-rustiness and a preference for more ground brings the 1400m specialists well into the fray and Vaughan Marshall’s ace runner Seeking The Stars looks the one to beat. He is four-from-four over this distance at Kenilworth (x2), Scottsville and Durbanville, and chances are that the extended sprint at Greyville will suit him just as well. Marshall has able back-up in Richard Fourie’s mount, Silver Operator, another contender well suited to 1400m and having already enjoyed a preparation run last week.

Sean Tarry’s filly Under Your Spell will be all the rage in the G2 KZN Fillies Guineas. Already successful at G1 level, this smart racer gave Princess Calla a good run for her money in the recent Empress Club Stakes. If anywhere near her best, Under Your Spell should have the Guineas sewn up.

The G2 KZN Guineas is far more competitive, with none of the colts as clearly head and shoulders above their opposition as the Tarry filly. Justin Snaith’s highly rated pair of Double Superlative (MR125) and Pomp and Power (MR118) have a clear advantage at the three-year-old race conditions, but may need their first seasonal runs in Durban. The Dean Kannemeyer duo, Cosmic Highway and Waterberry Lane, will warrant strong consideration as a result, and there are others with chances including Brett Crawford’s well-performed Zapatillas and Supreme Power, the well-bred and imposing colt representing Mike and Adam Azzie’s yard.

There is a low-key meeting at Turffontein on Sunday for which Mike de Kock has provided us with comments for his four runners on the day.

Race 4: Equestrian Affair
“The form from his last start (Tattenham Hill) has worked out well, so on that he must have a chance. He’s a horse I think is not bad at all, I’m disappointed he hasn’t shown more. But he could possibly need gelding, which I will consider after this run. Definite Pick 6 inclusion.”

Race 5: Mansooriya and Vaguely Familiar
“Both fillies here are what you see in their form – weak. Hoping they can stay on into the money, but they’re not going anywhere near Hollywood.”

Race 6: Jaipur Jewel
“He also comes from the Tattenham Hill formline. He’s a horse I’ve always thought will win more than a single race so it will be interesting to see how he goes after his Maiden. It’s always tough first time after Maiden, he is drawn wide but don’t leave him out. He has a competitive rating.”
