2020 Super Rugby

Round 1

Jaguares v Lions

Jose Amalfitani Stadium, Buenos Aires

The Lions will face a tough opening to their Super Rugby campaign when they face last year’s runners-up, the Jaguares, at Jose Amalfitani Stadium in Buenos Aires on Saturday 1 February 2020, kick-off at 23:40. The match is one of seven across Friday and Saturday for Round 1 of the new Super Rugby season.

The Lions had a disappointing 2019 campaign, finishing ninth on the overall log to miss out on the playoffs by just one position and one point, having been finalists in 2018.

This year, first-time Super Rugby head coach Ivan van Rooyen will he hoping that his own youthful energy and the determination of up-and-coming players such as Hacjivah Dayimani, Vincent Tshituka, Tyrone Green and Mannie Rass inspires them, while there are veteran heads to help guide the way, such as prop Jannie du Plessis.

“For us as a union and a system, we firmly believe there is a lot of good stuff going both on attack and defence and to just keep on going with it, and build longer phases of pressure,” explained van Rooyen.

The Lions have won their last three Super Rugby matches against the Jaguares, including a thrilling 47-39 triumph in the teams’ most recent meeting in Johannesburg in March 2019.

Five of the last six matches between the Johannesburg and Buenos Aires sides have ended in favour of the Lions, with the only exception a 49-35 win for the Jaguares in March 2018.
