International Friendly
South Africa v Tanzania
Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane
Friday 6 June, 2025
19:30
South Africa and Tanzania will meet for just the fourth time when they clash in an International Friendly, set for the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on the evening of Friday 6 June, 2025. Kick-off is at 19:30.
South Africa come into the clash on the back of successive 2-0 wins over Lesotho (home) and Benin (away) in March in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers – results which have put Bafana Bafana well on course for a return to the global showpiece for the first time since hosting the tournament in 2010.
This clash against Tanzania serves as preparation for the resumption of the qualifiers in September, as well as the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which will kick-off at the end of the year.
SA coach Hugo Broos has been unable to select several regulars from domestic champions Mamelodi Sundowns, as their team played in the CAF Champions League final, second leg this past weekend and will go on to feature in the FIFA Club World Cup, which begins in the middle of June.
However, he sees this game against Tanzania – and a subsequent friendly against Mozambique on June 10 – as an opportunity to take a look at several new players in a less-pressured environment.
“It’s a very good opportunity now. it’s not a game or qualifier for [the] World Cup or AFCON. If you lose that game is disaster, but if we lose [a friendly] it’s not a problem,” said Broos, whose selection includes uncapped players Samukele Kabini, Renaldo Leaner, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, Khulumani Ndamane, Dean Van Rooyen, Simphiwe Selepe, Yanela Mbuthuma and Mohau Nkota.
Tanzania, who are also preparing for the resumption of World Cup qualifiers and the AFCON in September and December respectively, were last in action in March, recording a 3-0 home win over Congo and 0-2 defeat away to Morocco.
In head-to-head stats, South Africa and Tanzania have met in three previous matches. The first was a Four Nations tournament match in October 2002 which ended 1-1 before the Taifa Stars won on penalties; the second saw Bafana win 1-0 in a friendly in 2011; and the latest meeting was a 2017 Cosafa Cup clash in which the East Africans triumphed 1-0.
