The World Cup tournament has been taking place, for men, since 1930, however women were not allowed to compete since 1991. The first official women’s World Cup was held in 1991 with the United States national team getting top honours.

Marta Vieira da Silva 

The women’s World Cup top goal scorer is Brazilian Marta Vieira da Silva. She still has the chance to improve on this tally in France, as she is still part of the Brazilian national team at age 33.
 
The top scorer in a single World Cup match is Michelle Akers of the US. She scored five goals in game against Taiwan in 1991.
 
The fastest goal scored in the tournament was also scored 1991 by Lena Videkull of Sweden who opened the scoring with just 30 seconds on the clock against Japan.
 

Goal-line technology


 

The 2015 Women’s World Cup was the first major female tournament where goal-line technology was introduced. This technology allows the referee to see whether the ball has wholly crossed the goal line by means of a beep or vibration on their watch.
 

VAR included


 

The VAR system, otherwise known as Video Assistance Referee, will also be in use at this year’s tournament. The controversial system has been a major talking point across all football leagues, it’s inclusion at the Women’s World Cup is sure to turn one or two heads.
 

24 teams to compete


 

There are 24 teams competing in this year’s tournament, the same number as was in the 2015 showpiece. There were only 16 teams taking part in 2011, this shows how the tournament is growing in size and reputation.
 

Most successful team


 

The USA is the most successful women’s team at the world having lifted the first trophy of this tournament. Since 1991, they have won this prestigious tournament three times.
