It’s a big weekend of global racing, highlighted by the Grade 1 HWB Cape Guineas and four other Graded features from
HWB Kenilworth on Saturday, and the Longines International Races Turf World Championships from Sha Tin in Hong Kong on Sunday. Visit the Betway website for the best value odds, and use our TAB Tote portal to bet into Saturday’s Carryover Pick 6 at Kenilworth and the World Pool on Sunday.
Betway Ambassador Mike de Kock and Mathew de Kock have runners in the Grade 2 R600,000 Green Point Stakes and the HWB Guineas, worth R2-million.
Dave The King, Equus Horse Of The Year in 2024/5, gets a chance to get back to winning ways in Race 6, the highly competitive Green Point Stakes over 1600m. He failed in three previous attempts at this course distance as a younger horse, but it should be noted that he changed stables and was gelded after his last visit to Kenilworth in January 2023, and that he’s wo five races after that, including three Grade 1s. He is easy to back at 10-1 on the Betway boards and Mathew commented: “We are really happy with him. He is quite fit and ready, in a good space. It’s a very strong race, but he is a very strong horse with good form in this league and we’re expecting a good run.
Jan Van Goyen has been priced up second favourite at 7-2 for the Guineas, which also looks like fair value considering that he was last season’s Champion Two-Year-Old colt. “Jan Van Goyen travelled down very well to Cape Town this week. It’s another strong contest, everyone holds their young horses in high regard. But he has a massive chance, should give a good account of himself,” said Mat.
Mike and Mathew have a further four runners lined up for Sunday’s race meeting at HWB Scottsville.
Race 2, 1200m: “A first-timer by Rafeef called
Hey Diddle Diddle. She is in a race with colts and geldings and several other first-timers, but a nice run is expected. We give her an Eachway chance.”
Race 6, 1400m: “Greenhouse might just need the run, but for once she has a good draw so could well be competitive here.”
Race 7, 1750m: “Gimmeforsure tries 1750m for the first time. We’re not sure what her correct distance is yet, she has scope. If she enjoys this, she could run well, so she’s best included.”
Race 8, 1200m: “These days
Beamonesque seems a little better around the bend, but the programme didn’t correspond with his readiness, so we’ve elected to run him here. He ran well up the straight at Scottsville as a younger horse, so should be competitive and warrants inclusion.”

The annual Longines International Races Turf World Championships is the biggest race day on Hong Kong’s racing calendar, and features four exceptional Group 1 races with some of the world’s biggest names in action.
The top level action starts in Race 4, the HK Gold Vase over 2400m, where the main contenders are Joseph O’Brien’s Al Riffa, the three-time Group 1 winner, and his father Aidan’s runner, Los Angeles. Joseph said: “Al Riffa is a seasoned traveller, in actual fact he enjoys it. He’s shipped out here well and we’re hoping for a big run.”
Star sprinter Ka Ying Rising aims to become the seventh dual winner of the HK Sprint (Race 5, 1200m) and is in fantastic form, following victories in The Everest in Australia and the recent Jockey Club Sprint.
My Wish, who will be ridden by South African Luke Ferraris, has a good chance at Group 1 success in Race 7, the HK Mile, in which Zac Purton’s seasoned mount Galaxy Patch looms an obvious danger.
The grand old champion Romantic Warrior made history last year as the first horse to win three editions of the HK Cup and he may well extend that record in the 2025 renewal, Race 8 over 2000m.
